Today we’d like to introduce you to Hannah Marjon.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I grew up near the beach my entire life, and from a very young age had an obsession with having a bunch of bikinis. This eventually became an obsession with finding perfectly fitting bikinis. I love so many of the amazing bikini companies out there, but I felt that there wasn’t necessarily a company that provided the styles, fit, and quality I wanted at young adult prices.
That’s how in my sophomore year of college, I sat down one day and designed seven super simple styles. I had never designed any piece of clothing or swimwear in my entire life. I just printed off an outline of a woman and drew what I wanted my bikinis to look like. I spent the rest of the night emailing as many manufacturers as I could find on Google. Over the next two weeks, I talked with so many of them and eventually found the manufacturer I still use. Then I had my first samples made. I remember I was so excited when they got there, I had my boyfriend take a bunch of pictures of me in them even though I had to have them mostly re-made.
I didn’t try to get any funding because I wasn’t sure what this was really going to be yet. So, I paid for those first samples and my first order from my college fund. I was working on this from September 2017 until in January 2018 I finally told people who weren’t my boyfriend and mom about it. I used my friends from college as my models, so I would have the stuff to post. From then, I just started promoting like crazy on social media and to anyone who would listen. I launched the online store and first collection on April 7, 2017.
I have since done a bunch of color releases and recently released a whole new collection. Now, I’m working on our third collection and it’s awesome! I definitely never could have imagined when I made those first seven sketches that it would be what it is now. I just came off of doing my first Miami Swim Week event and it was beyond words. I had a pop-up shop at the 1 Hotel South Beach and everything, from the people to the reactions and other companies I invited to take part, was absolutely perfect.
Has it been a smooth road?
No! I don’t think there is such a thing as starting a business from scratch in a “smooth” way. At least, every entrepreneur I have talked to has said their journey was bumpy too. For starters, I had never designed anything before. I was 19 and had never even done my own taxes much less register a business and somehow pay those taxes. I had next to no money to pull everything off, and my first 300 suits were delivered to my studio apartment 2 days before they were supposed to be released because of a customs issue.
Nothing has ever been as stressful and difficult as this business has been, but that’s why it’s so rewarding when it goes well. Getting a new collection together and shipped is awful, but releasing it and seeing people love it makes it all worth it!
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Seven Swim is comfort, style, beauty, and sustainability. My first goal whenever I design a suit is to make a cut and style that will not only fit multiple body types but also flatter and feel good on those body types. There’s no point in creating an amazing bikini if no one feels comfortable or good about themselves when they wear it. I love to create bikinis that are on trend but with really fun colors and prints! My bikinis are a bit more affordable than some of the other companies out there so I try to give girls the styles they have been wanting but couldn’t pay the super high prices for. One of my absolute favorite parts about the company is that all of our bikinis are made from an eco-friendly fabric called Amni Soul Eco! I think making your production more sustainable is so important for any company but especially those in the fashion industry. My favorite part of our company and I think what sets us apart from others is the insanely awesome community we’ve created. There’s like ten girls I can think of off the top of my head who were among my very first customers and are still always among the first to order new releases. This is why creating genuinely good quality and amazing products are so important. People notice when you’ve put in the extra effort to make a perfect product and they respect that. The Seven Babes community (what our brand ambassadors are called) help us with everything from content curation to design!
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I love Miami and know it has given me many great opportunities in this industry. Such a young brand would never have been able to be in Miami Swim Week but since I live here, I was able to pull it off!
