Today we’d like to introduce you to Guimar Urbina.
Guimar, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My dream growing up was to be an architect. I am originally from Venezuela and had the opportunity to study in the United States. At the time, I envisioned starting my own clothing line and decided to study Fashion Merchandising. After graduating and working in the field, I felt like something was missing. Instead of moving back to Venezuela for fashion, I stayed in Miami and went back to school to study Interior Design. This allowed me to stick to my childhood dreams. I worked professionally with various designers including Carlos Miranda and his wife – the owners of Miami’s Seaspice restaurant, as well as the noteworthy Allen Saunders. During this time, I was receiving projects of my own until I decided to pursue opening my own firm. At the beginning of this journey, I was also working at hospitality purchasing company, The Parker Company, that allowed me the flexibility and income to start KIS Interior Design. Years later, I was a fully-operating interior design firm with a team. In 2017, I transformed KIS into Guimar Urbina Interiors, the firm that exists today.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
There are many challenges along the way, but they are necessary to make you a strong and wise business leader. One of the biggest challenges as a designer is dealing with a client’s misunderstanding of what an interior designer does. I often get confused with a decorator. In reality, an interior designer is the same as an architect, only difference is the focus inside a space. I often find myself having to educate clients on the extent of my profession, which works with mechanical, electrical, lighting, construction, and permitting aspects.
Another struggle is building a team of trustworthy and hardworking designers nowadays. I have dealt with multiple incidents of employed interior designers that either lack respect for company private information, or let their ambitions overstep professional etiquette.
Please tell us about Guimar Urbina Interiors, Corp.
Guimar Urbina Interiors is a full-range interior design firm that specializes in luxury residential design. In addition to interiors, I design custom homes directly with architects and developers. I also have my own collection of high-end wallcoverings and fabrics together with The Wallpaper Company, the best local provider. Visually, I am known for a contemporary style with a vibrant twist. I am most proud of my firm’s ability to go above and beyond client’s expectations. We do more than design, we create lifestyles. What sets me apart from other designers is the attention I pay to clients and the relationships that grow from working together. Anyone can be creative, but I merge innovation with functionality in a way that has clients coming back for more projects.
What were you like growing up?
I grew up with a big dream of owning my own company or design line one day. This vision allowed me to explore fashion, interiors, and architecture in a way that I can mix all three. I have always considered myself a hard worker, that also enjoyed life. A big interest of mine is travel. Being able to see other countries has allowed me to expand my vision and ideas.
