Today we’d like to introduce you to Guillermo Pascual.
Guillermo, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I began my Construction career in 1998, as a Union Ironworker where I was tying rebar and doing commercial high rise window installations. Then, I decided to go work directly for a window company and was able to learn the systems and components well enough to be promoted to the Foreman position and run a 10 man crew… little did I know, that most of the crew I was given were not English speaking workers and I really didn’t know much Spanish at the time. Fortunately, everyone around me, helped me learn Spanish quickly and being bilingual really has enhanced my career and travels.
In April of 2000, I was approached by a waterproofing company in Fort Lauderdale that needed someone with my experience in window sealants and repelling. They made me an offer that changed my life. Moving forward, I accepted the offer and quickly began to put my skills to work and learning the ins-and-outs of all types of waterproofing. I became a Leadman in a year, then a year later, became a Foreman and within 5 years of starting with that company, I became the General Superintendent in charge of all Field Operations, Materials, Manpower, and Scheduling. For the next 8 years, I ran as much as 70 people and as few as 20. Throughout that time period, I implemented various policies that helped the company maximize their workloads while increasing their profits and implemented safety measure, by doing so, we were able to lower the Worker Compensation MOD Rate to the lowest level it had ever experienced.
In June of 2013, it became clear to me that I had accomplished everything the company had asked of me and it was time to take the lessons learned along the way and begin G-Force Waterproofing & Restoration, a family business. From that point, I began to piece together everything needed to build the Waterproofing business I dreamed of owning. First I applied for my own Waterproofing license in Miami-Dade County. After going through that process and finally receiving my license, I then incorporated and through time established G-Force Waterproofing & Restoration.
Even though my wife and I did not have considerable Capital to fund the company, we were both determined to use the money we had in our savings to get our company on its feet & grow. We reached out to friends, family, and associates across south Florida, in hopes that someone would give us a chance to prove our new business was going to be successful. I went house to house, door to door to get business. Sometimes finding one window leak at a time was enough to spread the word that G-Force Waterproofing & Restoration was doing great work and willing to do what it takes to earn a good local reputation. Day by day and job by job, I was able to get enough work to hire a helper… and then a few weeks later, another helper. After a few more months, the word started to get to the larger companies, that G-Force was ready, willing and able to do larger commercial projects. Shortly thereafter companies started to sign contracts with us to do mid-rise and high rise buildings for “Labor Only” work. Since we did not have enough capital, the “labor only” market became a real viable option for us to explore with larger companies that had larger workloads, but just didn’t have the manpower or manufacturer certifications and support than G-Force. We started to make dozens of deals for labor only contracts on high rises for other companies for a few years in order to build our own working capital to allow us to include material in our services.
After almost 4 years of doing mainly labor only contracts, we began buying the bulk of our own materials for the projects we were working on. Shortly thereafter, we were finally able to move the business from our kitchen counter to our Offices and Warehouses in Doral, FL. For the next year, I would dedicate my time and efforts to grow our company into a self-sufficient waterproofing company that works for a great deal of Developers, GC’s, and Private homeowners that rely on our expertise in the business to accomplish all the waterproofing needs they may have. I recruited a few Estimators/Project Managers & trained them all on the ideals and methods that I had based this business from, reliability and quality, in hopes they would help grow our company.
Has it been a smooth road?
The road has not been smooth, but as a company, we always work through whatever life brings us from having to remove and replace our work, to have our work destroyed by others who had no idea they were causing the damages. The most important part for us is that G-Force Waterproofing & Restoration will always do the right thing by our customers, even if it is not what we expected. That seems to be the main reason we have many returning customers, that don’t want anyone else to do the work but us.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
G-Force Waterproofing & Restoration specializes in New Construction & Restoration of Waterproofing in below grade and above grade structures on high-end homes & High Rises. When it comes to below grade (below the building structure), we do a multitude of Bentonite, Self adhered Membranes, Cementitious product, and Cold Fluid applied coatings at basements and foundations. On the exterior envelope of buildings (above grade), we perform Air and Vapor barriers on walls, Hot applied, Deck Coating, Epoxy Coatings & cold applied Waterproofing on Amenity decks, Ramps, Private terraces, Balconies and on just about every condition that exists. We also now offer Shotblasting & Concrete sloping/placement services when we are restoring waterproofing projects. What separates us from our competition is that we are certified in almost all major manufacturers and we are able to take a project from start to finish in most cases, without needing subcontractors.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Miami is just about the most tropical location in the southeast United States. It is a great location for this type of business. If someone was just starting out in this business, I would recommend that they work for a company like G-Force Waterproofing & Restoration, so they can be trained in the right way to approach and tackle the waterproofing issues that arise in South Florida, before they try to get into their own business.
