Meet Giuseppe Salamone of Say Bookkeeping in Miami Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Giuseppe Salamone.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Originally I’m from New Jersey, and I had a life filled with many moves over the years. My very first accounting job was working as an accounts payable clerk at America Online in Dulles, Virginia. After that job, I worked in accounting for a variety of different companies while I pursued my undergraduate degree in international studies. I graduated from the University of South Florida in 2005, and moved to Sydney, Australia on a work visa. After working down under for 6 months, I moved back to Tampa and was hired as a Finance Supervisor at JP Morgan Chase. I stayed there for nearly two years but I had another “itch” to travel internationally, and I made the move to Phuket Thailand where I got certified to teach English as a foreign language. For the next two years, I lived in Bangkok, and moved to Seoul, South Korea teaching English to foreign students while experiencing local culture and learning new languages myself.

In the beginning of 2009, I made the move back to the United States and landed in San Francisco. In California, I began working for a bookkeeping and accounting firm in the financial district. It was at this firm that I learned everything I know about successfully running a small business. Becky, the owner of the firm I worked for, was a great mentor and taught me a lot about many different types of businesses and how to effectively manage a client’s needs and expectations. I worked for her for nearly two years before moving to Miami to be closer to family in 2011. For the next 5 years I would work for a large health care non-profit where I honed my skills and completed my Master’s degree in Accounting.

In 2017 I decided it was time to make a move towards owning my own firm, and I started Say Bookkeeping. I wanted to create a boutique bookkeeping and accounting firm that would tailor its services to the needs of small business owners who wish to better understand their financial information to succeed. Shortly after starting the firm I realized there was a great need for bookkeeping services in South Florida, and the response has been tremendous. We have grown more than 400 percent in the last 6 months, and I have hired 4 staff since I went full-time with the business in January. I expect many more months of growth, and I have already started to expand services to NYC with plans to enter new markets in the future.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Owning a business is hard work. There are long hours involved, worries about making payroll for your employees, and of course, worries about meeting your client’s expectations. The one thing I’ve learned from this experience is that as long as you show up and do your best each and every day, you will be rewarded. Everything always works out in the end, and I can honestly say I have been very blest and fortunate in how things have worked out.

Please tell us about Say Bookkeeping.
Say Bookkeeping is a tech-focused bookkeeping firm because we help small business owners leverage bookkeeping and accounting technology to its full potential. Our flat fee structure is value-based, and it puts pressure on us as a firm to make our clients accounting as efficient and streamlined as possible. Our preferred software we use is QuickBooks Online, but we also use many integrative apps that work with QBO to improve our client’s operations depending on their needs.

One of the things we are most proud of as a company is our ability to offer an affordable monthly membership to smaller businesses who need access to an expert bookkeeper, but don’t have the budget or the need for full-service bookkeeping.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite childhood memory was family vacations at the beach. We always had a great time, got to play in the sand, and always had time for other types of fun like go carting, miniature golf, etc…

  • $150/mo – Say essentials membership (includes QBO subscription, monthly reconciliations, financial statements)
  • $200/mo – Say plus membership (includes QBO subscription, monthly reconciliations, financial statements, 1099 payments and issuance)
