Today we’d like to introduce you to Gail Ulloa.
Gail, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I am the CEO and Founder of Unique Families Inc. we are a nonprofit organization geared to help families who are currently experiencing or living with autism or any type of disability that is affecting their families. Unique Families Inc. became my vision after our oldest son, Adrian, was showing signs of autism at the age of two. Our world was shaken when his diagnosis was confirmed. Needless to say, our faith was challenged, and it felt as though God was very far away. Uncertainty led the road ahead with not many answers in sight. The Lord showed us immediately that we needed to trust him, and we began on a journey down the road less traveled. Life seemed much scarier as the uncertainty that we would be facing with Adrian began to sink in.
We began the process of therapies. He needed a routine; therefore, we had therapists come to our home and his daycare many times a week. The therapist would come to our home and to his daycare to give him therapies. Of course, we had people who would tell us that Adrian would not be able to do for himself, and he wouldn’t get to master certain developmental goals. As we faced the various obstacles, the negativity began to take effect.
Together with Adrian, we began to feel the strength God gave us to continue to push against the advice
given to us. We know we have a long road ahead with him, but we take it one day at a time in hopes that God will grant us the desires of our heart to hear him speak one day. Due to this struggle, I knew that I wanted to help others. This was my way of coping with everything that I was feeling. On a day when my frustration was at its highest, I questioned God. I had spent countless hours on the phone with the insurance company and trying to find adequate therapies, but I just felt every door closing in my face. It was so frustrating to get the help that I
so needed for my son. During a conversation with my husband, I remember telling him that there had to be a purpose for this hurt. We were fortunate enough that we had family and friends who loved us and cared for us who helped us through the hardest times of our lives. This inspired me to help others in need of the same support system. I don’t know all of the answers, but a lending hand, a shoulder to cry on and or a word of advice can go a long way. That is why we decided to create a Unique Families Inc., to do exactly that: help others on the same path. We started the foundation in 2015 and nothing could have prepared me for the journey we embarked upon. I have met some amazing families in this journey.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The road has not been a smooth, especially because I am a wife, a mom of three, and that includes a child with special needs. I have a full- time job and the foundation. There have been many sleepless nights when I am trying to figure out what is our next step? How do we raise funds to help more families? Could I do this full time? Will people be open to donating to our organization? There are many questions still to be answered. Looking forward, support is what we can provide to those families who feel alone having to do travel the road by themselves. I want you to know that you are not alone.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Unique Families – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Currently, we have launched a children’s story book called Three winks I love you! that can be found on Amazon. What sets us apart is the authentic love we have for all families and our desire to simply lend a hand, assist with guidance on what steps to take, and provide monetary help for therapies and services. Our goal is to let parents know that what sets us apart is the fact that we are on the same journey, but doing it together makes it much more tolerable. It is because of my son that I want more than anything, to open a center dedicated to children in the spectrum or any special need child. I want to create a place where both patients and parent can find the help they need. The center will be a non for profit organization that will provide behavioral therapy, physical therapy, dental, general medicine, sensory room therapy and much more.
What role has the luck (good luck or bad luck) played in your life and business?
We truly believe that God puts people in our path for a purpose. I would not put it as “luck” but as blessed.
