Today we’d like to introduce you to Francy Deskin.
Francy, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
We’re just a couple of freckle-faced kids making sauce that will change your life!
When we would make the sauce for family and friends and get reactions like, “OMG! What is this sauce?” and “No, seriously! I’ve never tasted anything so good!” and “I need you to make me some of this sauce!” and inevitably, “You gotta jar this stuff up!” We smiled and nodded for years. Until the comments reached pitchfork mob mentality and we thought: they really mean it. We better get to bottling some of a good thing!
That is how it came to be known as The Sauce.
My brother Frank and I are passionate about good food and eating well and how beautifully these things bring family together. We believe in this sauce and there’s love in every jar. That’s why it tastes so good! Our sauces have nice honest ingredients, with ingredients you can pronounce and there is no sugar and no preservatives added. We back up our passion with a culinary degree from the Culinary Institute of America and an IT degree that propels our online presence and combine it with an entrepreneurial spirit that just won’t quit. It’s been beautifully hard work to help our business grow more than 6-fold from its first year to it second.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
We have built our business on a budget that supports its own growth, rather than accumulating debt, which (like any business) is a great challenge. And it IS supporting its own growth! There are some visions and dreams for the company that we wish we could execute, but instead, we are patient. And sometimes, patience is the hardest thing.
Another struggle is that shortly after launching the business in South Florida, my brother Frank “Frak” had an incredible opportunity to move his family back to Atlanta. Family comes first and so instead of letting the business fade, we launched a parallel campaign in Atlanta. So now, Frik & Frak has production facilities in both regions, where we make the same exact recipe for both markets! Operating the business from two different cities has its challenges.
Frik & Frak Foods – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We make the world’s perfect pasta sauce! And it is so versatile in the kitchen! We are so proud of putting something good out into the universe! The thing that sets us apart from others is the taste! So fresh, just like homemade, but in a jar. It really causes people who are committed to homemade to take a second look and move past the criticism of “using jarred sauce.”
Trust me!!! I get it!!! I know that sick sick feeling of compromise when you don’t make something from scratch and are forced to use it for the sake of time or convenience. I LOVE turning people’s hearts when they taste our sauce. And I know when they say “it’s as good as mine” I know they are being proud. But, like I said, “I get it!!”
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Having the bravery to do something like this and watching it succeed before my very eyes.
