Today we’d like to introduce you to Free Bison.
So, before we jump into specific questions about your music, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Whagwon! I am Free Bison, the vegan rapper. I’m Brooklyn born, and Miami-Dade raised. I am a founder of BISON, Miami’s very own vegan art movement. I’ve been rapping and producing music for 14 years under the BISON creed of LIGHT LIFE LOVE. I found my love for hip hop at an early age, after moving to Miami and attending The Catalyst, a monthly breakdancing convention. Safe to say, my career began with windmills and head spins, and gradually transitioned into rapping and producing. Following the death of my close friend and cultural icon, Trayvon Martin, I channeled all of my focus on music to promote positive affirmation, such as anti-gun violence, spiritual wellness, and AHIMSA (the practice of non-violence towards all living beings). Today, BISON stands with support of vegan activists and animal rights movements all over the globe, even gaining a cosign from PETA, the most recognized animal rights group in the world. My goal is to unite the vegan communities of the world and spread the hidden truth of animal agriculture, and its detrimental effects on our bodies, souls, and the planet.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Does any artist ever have a smooth ride?? BEING AN ARTIST, IS THE HARDEST! I have opposing viewpoints from my peers and others in my field, and this has definitely made me a target. My expression of beliefs have alienated me from my seemingly violent, sex-crazed, and drug-induced peers. I speak my mind, and more importantly, I speak my heart.
In my opinion, it is this attribute that has forever immortalized the greatest leaders and heroes. Martin Luther King Jr, Mahatma Ghandi, and Malcom X all stood for what they believed was right, regardless of societies’ disapproval. Although martyred, their messages forever live on and shine light into the darkest places. As a vegan rapper, I feel blacklisted, outcasted and shunned by my community but it doesn’t bother me… Not one bit… because I believe that what I stand for is right. I protect innocent animals, and I promote the sustainability of our planet for all of its future inhabitants.
The biggest struggle I’ve faced in my life is losing a lot of loved ones. However, the pain of grief and mourning has only strengthened my beliefs and overall respect for life. I can empathize with the pain of animals, and I can sympathize with the grief that animals feel when they are taken from their loved ones. Death is a PART of life, but it should never BE our life. Whenever we use animal products, we are endorsing the unnecessary murder of animals and destruction of our environment. Modern-day science has proven that we do not NEED animal products to live, meaning that using animal products is nothing other than a moral choice. Therefore, It is my choice to be a vessel of life… not death…
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My family are my greatest supporters, inspirations, and role models in my life. My mother endlessly loves me and supports me in my dream and passion for music. She will always be my best friend and my biggest fan. My father, an immigrant from the Bahamas, has dedicated his entire life to his family. His only goal was to create for us, the opportunities that he’s never had. His tireless work ethic inspires me to achieve my goals without ever seeing a reason or an excuse to quit.
My little sister, @SKY.BISON, has the most empathetic heart out of anyone I know. SKY has a gift of seeing things outside of her own perspective and constantly reminds me the importance of understanding, patience, and forgiveness for one another. And finally, my big brother @CHOICEBISON is a spiritual and creative mentor in my life. CHOICE’s determination to make his life meaningful, outside of material gain, is what drives me to be more of a positive figure in my community and my field of work. My brother is never impressed with the “things” I can attain, but more so with what I’m able to learn and teach-back to the world. CHOICE centers my ego… Without my family, I am nothing… Without BISON, I am nothing… I invite you to join my family… Join The BISON Movement. GO VEGAN! LIGHTLIFELOVE BISON ✌️❤️🌱🌍
