Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Wincel.
Emily, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
After graduating with a degree in communication studies from Arizona State University in 2014, I landed my first job as a social media manager at a Scottsdale, AZ-based advertising agency. This was during a time that businesses were just starting to immerse themselves in the social media world. I had the opportunity to work with some incredible brands, such as AC Hotels by Marriott, Moxy by Marriott, Hotel Valley Ho, Mountain Shadows, In Good Spirits restaurant group and so many more.
After two amazing years with The James Agency, I went through a drastic career changed and moved into the semiconductor industry. I learned pretty quick that the corporate world really wasn’t my cup of tea, but the experience I gained in that environment is indispensable and like nothing, I would have received anywhere else.
Now, I am delighted to say that I am back in the social media industry (my true love) working for one of the most beautiful properties in South Florida, Acqualina Resort & Spa.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Smooth is definitely not how I would describe my career path. During my time in the semiconductor industry (which is very male-dominated), I experienced extreme sexual discrimination. There were multiple times I was told not to attend certain events or meetings because the way I looked was a distraction. And then, on the other hand, would be told to attend other events or meetings because the guests would like the way I looked. It was something I had never experienced before, and will never let myself do so again.
I knew that my position at that company wasn’t going to last much longer. Waking up and dreading the thought of going to work every morning was not something I wanted to continue. But, I didn’t want to leave without a full and thought out plan. So, my next step was to figure out what it was that would truly make me happy. Which is how I made the move from Scottsdale, AZ to Miami Beach.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Acqualina Resort & Spa – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Acqualina is at the center of Sunny Isles Beach providing an exclusive experience and ultra-luxurious beach lifestyle like no other. As Florida’s only hotel of its kind, built open to the sea with no structural or visual barriers, Acqualina evokes a Mediterranean lifestyle just steps off the pristine sand into the Atlantic. I’ve been a part of the Acqualina family for just over three months, though it seems like much longer. I have the pleasure of being the social media manager at the property. Our five-star service is second to none, which you can feel even as an employee.
Everyone here makes you feel like family. I am part of a warm and passionate team who care about what they do and love going out of their way to create “WOW” stories for guests and residents. This has resulted in numerous awards – one we are most proud of is the TripAdvisor award, based on guest’s comments, as the best luxury beachfront hotel in the Continental US. In addition, we are a Forbes Five Star and AAA Five Diamond award winners.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
After moving across the country, and going through another major career shift, I’m good on big changes for quite a while. I look forward to growing with the Acqualina brand and contributing to its continuous success.
