Today we’d like to introduce you to Dukencia Romeus.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Dukencia. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I am 25 years old and I am a Licensed Esthetician and owner of Delightful Minks, where I provide eyelash extension services. I started doing lashes one of many reasons but the main one was that I needed some extra money. I needed a hustle.
March of 2015, my junior year of college I found out I was pregnant but not just pregnant. I was pregnant with twins! From early on I knew I had a high-risk pregnancy and early delivery was expected but not how early that thought I would be. Fall semester of 2015 my 2nd week of school my twins entered the world weighing 1 pound each at 25 weeks(6 months). I was scared beyond my mind but I knew God had everything in control. Juggling school, newborns, and going back and forth to the NICU. I was still able to come out strong and obtain my Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Florida Memorial University in fall of 2016.
By then I had one child home and one still in the hospital. Due to my twin’s prematurity my daughter developed pulmonary hypertension which is high blood pressure in her lungs and had to get a trachea put in place to help her breathe better. So a 3-4 month hospital stay which my son did till my actual due date ended up to be 11 months in the NICU for my daughter. You can imagine how emotionally that could take a toll on someone. Nonetheless, I still did what I had to do. Unfortunately for me, my schedule was a quite bit hectic so it was extremely hard trying to find a well-paying job in my field that would be willing to work with my schedule. In those moments, I spent time home with my children I learned so much, of course, I wanted to continue schooling but wasn’t sure what yet because just being honest I didn’t have a passion for Psychology like I thought I did. It’s not until after having so much frustration trying to find a speech therapist to come to the home to start therapies with my daughter is when I started to look more into the field. Found great interest in it and then boom, I figured out what I wanted to do. Luckily for me, I found a school in Miami that offered a Speech Pathology program but everything would have to be out of pocket and that my friends started my hustle to start lashing.
I used to looovvveee doing my lashes and I thought maybe I should do lashes since I can’t do hair to save my life. I took my first lash class back in December of 2017, I still didn’t feel super confident so I took another class again in March of 2018 by then I was confident and started lashing friends and family members. By April of 2018, a friend and I decided to rent a suite space together where she did makeup and I did lashes! Business was super slow at first but I did not let that discourage me. I continued to do what I thought would be a side hustle but now actually LOVE doing. As I continued to learn new techniques, the do’s and don’ts, I realized if you actually care about what you’re doing you will dedicate everything you have to it. So then I decided to get my esthetician license and that’s what also started my Mink Monday segments on YouTube. What started as informational post on Instagram every Monday transitioned to me starting a YouTube page.
Although my business is still growing and I hope to expand a bit more and provide more services soon, I never thought that I would be here today. I’m not saying I’m this super duper lash Tech that’s better than anyone or has more knowledge than anyone but I have a lot of faith in myself that I will make it wherever it is I’m trying to go. With school still a top priority for me, I still want to be able to do better for not just me but for my kids because they deserve the world!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It definitely has not been a smooth road. One of the biggest struggles was having people that you thought were rooting for you doubt you. Just having people discourage you and try to kick you while you’re down already because believe me at first when starting a business the bad days seem to outweigh the good.
Please tell us about Delightful Minks.
So I provide eyelash extensions services, in other words, I do lashes. I think what sets me apart from other lash techs is that I’m me. I always try to find new ways to bring in more clients and the fact that I started my Mink Monday segments, informing clients or any other lash techs on lashing alone, is something I seen no one else in my area doing. Also, many people ask me why did I choose the name DelightfulMinks. Well for starters I like to consider myself a very pleasant person, a bit shy until I’m comfortable but for the most part I definitely want to give my clients and everyone I come across a delightful, pleasant experience. I also love flowers, if you notice my logos closely, they have some floral design to them in some sort, and flowers are also delightful 🙂
What are you striving for, what criteria or markers have you set as indicators of success?
I define success as looking back at the person you were yesterday and seeing the person you are today. If you noticed positive changes, then that’s definitely success right there. If you finally got that job or degree you been striving for, then success was written all over your name.
