Meet Dr. Andre Caruso of Psychological Health And Therapy Center in Fort Lauderdale

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Andre Caruso.

Dr. Caruso, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
So much like our logo, I am a bit of a unicorn. Growing up I always enjoyed helping others and even did peer counseling way back in middle school. So naturally, I wound up in the restaurant/hospitality business for 20 years, lol. While I loved the business, I knew I wanted to make a bigger impact and decided to chase my initial passion. So, back to school, I went to become the Clinical Psychologist that I am today. My journey after college was also unique. I was the Director of Training at a whole person’s health institute, shaping the minds of interns and practicum students from multiple local colleges, psychology programs. The COO of a mental health, non-profit organization and the Vice Principal of a school for special needs children. While I still get to enjoy my consulting work with companies, educating and training their employees, I knew I wanted to get back to the therapy room. So, in 2018, I founded the Psychological Health And Therapy Center, in east Ft. Lauderdale. Where I, along with my awesome team of clinicians, get to impact lives by providing individual, couples and family therapy. I truly believe, Awesomeness is achieved through a healthy mind!

Has it been a smooth road?
Totally smooth sailing, of course… Haha, actually, I think my GPS only led me to the bumpy roads. Going back to college after being out of school for years, was definitely a challenge. I was also a “little” older than my fellow students and hadn’t sat in a classroom to learn anything in quite a while. Even though I decided to change careers, the mortgage still had to be paid. I worked pretty much full time while balancing a full-time grad school schedule. So, graduating took a little longer than planned. I do, however, think my real-world experiences served me well, and gave me good insights, that not everyone else had. Now, I’m a business owner, and as anyone that has ever started their own business knows, the struggles are always poking around. Preparation and patience are your best tools to shoo them away.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
At the PHAT Center, we pride ourselves on being very inclusive and offering the safest space we can for folks to be their most authentic self. We are a full-service mental health and wellness practice. We have a team of excellent therapists with different specialties, so we are equipped to treat a variety of issues. Personally, I focus my work in two areas: I assist business professionals in dealing with stress, anxiety and achieving work-life balance. My 20+ years in the business arena along with my expertise in behavior modification, provide me a unique insight and tools to best achieve awesome outcomes. Additionally, I am very passionate about assisting those in exploring their identities. Whether that is professionally, personally, sexually and/or gender. I specifically work a lot with the transgender and gender non-conforming communities. Equality for everyone!

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I love Fort Lauderdale. As someone born and raised in South Florida, I have a big connection to the area. As a member of the Ft. Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce, I get to interact with many business owners in the area. There is a lot of excitement for the growth of the city, while still keeping its charm. While there are a plethora of therapists in South Florida, I truly believe if you provide great service and are authentic, you can thrive and be very successful in this community.
