Meet Dr. Amira Ogunleye

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Amira Ogunleye.

Dr. Amira Ogunleye was born in August of 1983 in Alexandria, Egypt. She was an immigrant to the United States of America when she entered the country with her father, a single parent traveling with his three young children. She came from very humble beginnings, as her family lived in poverty through her early years.

Her father worked 2-3 jobs at a time, leaving Ogunleye to be cared for predominantly by her older sister (nine years her senior). Although her family didn’t have much, a spirit of hard work and the importance of education was instilled in her as a child. Her father was extremely strict with academics which would later lead to her future success.

Dr. Ogunleye went on to achieve academic excellence, finishing many college courses in her high school years. She continued on to Howard University, where she completed an accelerated Combined Education Program (B.S/D.D.S). This enabled her to obtain her Bachelors of Science in two years. She then completed four years of comprehensive dental courses to receive her Doctoral Degree. At the time, she was the youngest (23 years old) to ever graduate from Howard University College of Dentistry.

Dr. Ogunleye is the co-owner of dental powerhouse, Beautiful Smiles, located in South Florida. She has a primary focus in Cosmetic Dentistry. She has received honorary awards in dental research and her work has been recognized by the Washington D.C Dental Society, the New York Dental Society and the American Dental Association. She has been featured on television stations: NBC and the CW discussing all things Dental and her activism with Women Empowerment. In addition, she has been spotlighted by the Washington Post and interviewed by radio personalities and online publications focused on all of the many hats Dr. Ogunleye wears.

Dr. Ogunleye is married to retired NFL star, Adewale Ogunleye. They share two children, a daughter and a son.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Absolutely not. I have had my share of struggles. I am an immigrant woman in a white male-dominated field. I have faced sexism and racism while trying to pursue my passions. That alone has taught me the true meaning of strength and why it was so necessary for me to be a voice and an example for people who look like me. Struggle builds character, so I have learned to embrace it as growth and try to encourage others along my path to continue to dream big despite the adversities.

Building a brand and more importantly, a reputation to be proud of takes time and a lot of effort. I heard a lot of “No’s” and failed my share of times. I would wipe the board clean, pick myself up and try again. Success requires making many sacrifices (sleep, relationships, “things,” sanity). It was never easy but it was definitely worth it!

Please tell us more about your work. What do you do? What do you specialize in? What sets you apart from competition?
I am the co-owner of dental powerhouse, Beautiful Smiles, located in South Florida. I have a primary focus in Cosmetic Dentistry. I have received honorary awards in dental research and my work has been recognized by the Washington D.C Dental Society, the New York Dental Society and the American Dental Association.

I have built a brand as the premier celebrity dentist and trusted choice by professional athletes in both the National Football League (NFL) and the National Basketball Association (NBA). I have award-winning Hollywood actors and professional singers who seek out my expertise.

In addition to my profession, I have a huge passion for community service and activism. I am dedicated to the empowerment of women and have made mentor-ship and charity a priority in my daily routine. My efforts allow hundreds of underprivileged children in the community to receive teeth screenings, cleanings and braces free of charge. Helping families who can’t always afford dental services.

I believe what sets me apart from others is my passion, true care for my clients and my attention to detail. I have always chased the relationships and perfecting my craft… not the money. My reputation in this field was one of the most important things and that has everything to do with my value of INTEGRITY.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I can’t say just one thing to be honest. I stand by these qualities that I truly believe in.

-LOVE – You have to genuinely love what you do in order to be great at it. Pleasure in your career puts perfection in your work. Anyone who knows me, knows I have a huge love for what I do.
-CARE – Nobody cares what you do or how much you know until they know how much you care. People can see when you are passionate. Period.
-DETAIL – I have aimed to be so detailed at what I do that when it comes to ordinary things, I strive to do them extraordinarily. When someone thinks about my field of Cosmetic Dentistry, I want to be the first on their mind.
