Meet Disco Sexo of Octopussy Lounge in North Miami

Today we’d like to introduce you to Disco Sexo.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Disco. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Octopussy Lounge was a party idea I had in mind a few years ago when I was still living in New York but didn’t come to life until I moved back to Miami in 2018. I had been in and out of showbiz and really wanted an “off-the-clock” setting for lgbtq+ performers & entertainers to gather, support each other, tip each other and have a good time. It came together really quickly, and all of a sudden, I was throwing this burlesque party in a 70’s bar in Opa-Locka. Since then, we’ve expanded as a collective and have had the opportunity to bring our performers to various spaces, and would like to make this a traveling party also when the time is right.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
We’ve had a fairly smooth ride so far, our collaborative is very supportive and loving to one another, and I feel blessed to work with people that communicate with such transparency. I think a challenge, however, for us all right now is the bumpy road of inconsistent work. Especially with this pandemic happening, there’s no way of knowing how long this will affect businesses, clubs, etc. where we get most of our performance work from.

Please tell us about Octopussy Lounge.
Octopussy Lounge is an all-inclusive, intersectional, lgbtq+ performance platform. In these events, we have a line-up of burlesque, strip-tease and pole performances, as well as DJ’s, and occasional live acts/musicians.

My role in this party is usually performing as host, coordinator and DJ… occasionally, I’ll hop up on the pole, with that said, we encourage anyone at the party wanting to try out some moves, to do so. Coming up on two years, I’ve had the honor of working with talented performers who have become Octopussy’s all-star line-up, Arkedabar, Gazebeau, Miami Issues, & Latina Delrey; I’ve had the honor of working with talented local visual artists- Gina Moscarella, who creates all our artwork and does so much behind the scenes to accomplish a collaborative vision for our parties; and Ashlyn McKibben, a very talented and stealthy photographer who documents these wonderfully mesmerizing moments. This lovely and talented group of people keep this party inspired and ever-growing.

I am really proud of all the people I work with, and how noticeably everyone grows in their artistry and skills. I’m proud to be surrounded by inspiring artists that not only uplift and empower each other but also welcome and encourage others to perform.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I had to start over and do something differently, I’d definitely find a way to go back to our first few parties and give my performers a proper dressing room… the dive bar provided, was not the most glamorous, but what can I say, that’s showbiz.
