Today we’d like to introduce you to Dennisha McThay.
Dennisha, please share your story with us.
As a child, I spent countless hours watching my mother sew, decorate her shoes, hats, and handbags. The details she added to the handbags captured my attention the most. My mother introduced me to fashion at an early age. Everyday my mother would dress me in the finest and fashionable clothes, hair bows, socks and shoes to match. Sunday through Saturday was a fashion extravaganza. Appearance and accessories were extremely important! I admired my mother’s fashion sense, style, and passion for details. She always aimed for perfection. I never connected the dots and realized that I was being prepared for a career as a handbag designer.
In 1996, I graduated high school and ventured off to Vocational School where I studied Cosmetology. One year later, I graduated and began operating in that field. What a great accomplishment, right? I felt incomplete. I was not pursuing fashion or a career I’m passionate about. The journey of feeling incomplete continued.
Years later, I was hired as a sales clerk in a clothing department store where I was promoted to a manager. Everyone always volunteered me to dress the mannequins. They loved my fashion style. Although my talent was being noticed, it wasn’t enough.
In 2013, I lost my job and was unemployed for almost 3 years. I knew in my heart designing handbags made me happy. I had a big thing for oversized handbags and tote bags but could never really find one I loved. They were just boring. I wanted one that was large enough for all of my crap, colorful, pretty on the inside and unique. The first year, I decided to experiment with my sewing machine and scrap fabrics to bring some of my designs to life. I began utilizing some of my sewing skills taught by mother and a few courses from High School. My first clutch took over four hours to make, it was brutal, but I loved it! I made it my goal to become an expert at my craft. I read lots of books and watched several tutorials. This self-taught designer was on her way!
When I would go out to parties and events with my custom handbags, women would love them and encourage me to make them available for purchase. The next few weeks, I launched the DMD brand and have created over 60 different styles.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road was not always smooth. It has its ups and downs but all things work together for your good. My struggle was mastering how to remain focused when business became tough. I had a hard time focusing effectively. It can be easy when you have a constant stream of clients, emails, orders and phone calls demanding your attention. Once the noise slows down or stop, you have to remain focused and strive harder. You eventually learn to enjoy the ups and have courage when you experience the downs. It’s an experience we all must go through in order to strengthen our character, faith, and determination. My down moments build me up and motivated me to design more creative work!

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Watching my mother design her hats, shoes, and handbags. When she would leave home, I couldn’t wait to play dress up with her hats, shoes, and handbags.
