Today we’d like to introduce you to Darla Powell.
Darla, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I was in a thankless career for 18 1/2 years. Fear kept me there. Fear of success or failure – however you want to look at it. Fear of paying my bills (that’s a big one!) My entire, remembered life I have been decorating. I was the only kid with oil paintings and Persian rugs in her treehouse. True story.
Then, one day, after listening to copious amounts of motivational interior design podcasts, (Primarily A Well Designed Business by LuAnn Nigara) I decided to go for it and start my own interior design firm.
My intent was to start part-time and slowly. My clients had other plans. Three months after Darla Powell Interiors was launched, I retired from my day job. I haven’t looked back once. Now I love what I do and that also includes writing for my weekly interior design blog, Wingnuts & Wallpaper, which is a slightly irreverent yet informational blog and a heck of a lot of fun.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Nothing is smooth about starting your own business. The learning curve is tremendously steep and mistakes were made. The biggest struggle for me was in the logistics of running a full-blown design biz.
While design comes easily, business and running one…not as much. I have been extremely lucky to have found giving mentors who have helped tremendously with implementing systems and processes to streamline the experience. Both for us and the clientele.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Darla Powell Interiors – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
We are a residential interior design firm specializing in contemporary design with a vibe of “earthy elegance.” I am known for originality, trend bucking, and bold statements. I am incredibly proud of my team, our service and the quality of our work. If you read my blog, it won’t be too long before you realize what sets me apart from the others. Design shouldn’t be too serious all the time.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I plan on expanding the firm and hiring junior interior designers to allow me to focus more on the big design picture on multiple projects.
