Meet Danielle Orange

Today we’d like to introduce you to Danielle Orange.

Danielle, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My business started with the needs I had for my own hair. I decided to become natural about two and a half years ago, and I knew nothing about it. Everybody does the YouTube thing and try watching tutorials. I felt like that wasn’t enough for me because I couldn’t ask the difficult questions that weren’t detailed from the videos. Most of these YouTubers have been natural for years and want to show their way, but ideally, everyone’s hair is not the same and won’t require the same routine. These tutorials were made by beautiful natural-haired women who had no problem styling, didn’t have dry hair, didn’t have terrible ends — their hair was already beautiful and they’re giving all these amazing tips and I felt like I was not in the level of natural that they were. And so, I decided to start doing research. I researched different ingredients, chemicals, what they were meant to do and how to use them and began making products for myself. I saw my hair transforming and I was so happy. Other people were seeing the changes too and asked me so many questions. For a long time, I posted on social media how I did my hair, messaged people how they can help their selves. That influenced me to sell the products I was making for myself.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Anything we do in life involves a little obstacle. Not little — BIG OBSTACLES. Running a business is not easy, and it’s not all money and gain. It takes time, effort, and for me, my biggest obstacle was knowledge on running a business and support. I didn’t let that stop me. I loved the feedback I would receive, I knew the worth of my products, but I had no idea how to get it to the market, let alone answer questions for an article/interview. I taught myself everything I know. Had the help of my mom, my business partner who is my boyfriend and biggest supporter, my dear friend Albernisha, who owns her own business, and the support of my best friends. Support is really big for me, discouragement comes very easy if you let it, and I had to learn that I have family who does support me no matter who knows my product or not.

HoneyCurlz Hair – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My business, HoneyCurlz, is a natural hair, college student and black-owned, company that specializes in everything dealing with the improvement in health, growth, shine, moisture, and definition of natural hair. It does not limit itself to natural hair, I have lots of customers who have relaxed hair and tell me how restorative it is because it helps their heat damage or extreme shedding. I am most proud of my growth serum oil. It is my number one seller and popular product because of its hair growth abilities. Fast-growing hair, while soothing the scalp, preventing inflammation, helps with shine, really dry scalp and hair health overall. My most popular product upon my mail audience is the HoneyWaves Pommade is amazing and a rager among the needs for moisture and waves.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success in my eyes is like a resume. Everything you have done in your past has led you to this point. Resumes with amazing background and histories get you places, the land you jobs. It makes you think, what’s on your resume, what have you successfully done to get you where you are right now? Success is a reflection of hardwork, doing right by people, and getting things done even when you’ve made some unintentional mistakes along the way as long as you learn from them.
