Meet Dana Rozansky of Miami Food Porn

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dana Rozansky.

Dana, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My journey toward creating my own food blog has been a long, winding and delicious one. My first stint with blogging started back when I was a senior at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. I took a one-credit blogging class so that I could close out my college career while doing the least amount of work possible – while still having fun in the process. I had always loved trying new restaurants, so I naturally decided to focus on food for the subject of my first blog: Ann Arbor Appetite.

I remember printing, laminating and signing the first blog post I ever wrote about my favorite late-night pizza joint. I then proudly presented it to the shop’s owner, Pierre, which he then hung on the wall (hey, it’s the little things)! Whether my motivation was to score free slices of pizza or simply to get a good laugh, I can’t recall. But I do recall the enjoyment I got every time I sat down to write about a subject that excited me.

From there, I moved home to Miami where I took my talents to Yelp, writing feverishly until I earned myself a coveted spot in Yelp’s Elite Squad. My reviews were essentially short novels and I’m not sure who I thought was reading them, but I loved poring every ounce of creative energy I had left after work (or sometimes during, if we’re being honest) into these reviews.

After Yelp came Instagram, and the Miami Food Porn account was born. At first, I approached it casually, treating it as a hobby at best. But the more consistently I posted, the more I recognized the incredible potential of this little account. I started receiving invites to restaurants and events, and soon my casual hobby turned into a serious side hustle.

Nearly four years and 100,000 followers later, I couldn’t be happier that I followed this path that led me to Miami Food Porn. Sure, there are plenty of late nights, gluttonous meals and subsequent food comas, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
All in all, it has been an incredibly smooth road. That said, there have still been a handful of challenges along the way. Anyone who has started their own business can attest to the fact that there’s a learning curve. Everything from starting an LLC to managing the business and all that comes along with it was totally new to me. Luckily, I have an incredible group of mentors who have helped me through all of these firsts. The good news is that it gets easier with time.

To be honest, the biggest challenge for me has been striking a balance between work (believe it or not, I do more than just eat for a living!), the blog, my social life and some much-needed R&R. With dozens of emails flooding my inbox on a daily basis, it’s truly hard to say ‘no’ to an enticing meal or a fun event — but sometimes it’s necessary for the sake of my sanity (and my waistline).

Please tell us about Miami Food Porn.
Miami Food Porn is a Miami-based food blog that serves up serious food porn in all shapes and sizes. When it comes to food, I don’t discriminate. I’ll try nearly anything, and as long as I deem it worthy of the Miami Food Porn seal of approval, I’ll feature it on the blog. From upscale, iconic establishments to tiny holes in the wall, I genuinely cover it all.

I’m not a food critic nor an expert in the culinary field. I just enjoy trying new places, dishing about food and sharing my favorite finds with others. I like to approach my reviews with candor, personality and humor (or so I like to think) because after all, it’s food we’re talking about. This is supposed to be fun.

I’m proud of the Miami Food Porn brand I’ve developed, and more specifically, my brand’s voice. Anyone who follows me knows that I’m a sucker for a good play on words and I’m unapologetic when it comes to using cheesy puns. I try not to take myself too seriously or second-guess myself too often. I think that this approach, combined with the brand’s lighthearted tone, help set Miami Food Porn apart.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
It takes a combination of characteristics to make one successful in this industry. First and foremost, you’ve got to be hungry (literally and figuratively). Secondly, blogging requires a special type of energy and willingness to live a fast-paced, on-the-go lifestyle. Lastly, to be a successful blogger you have to be consistent. There are truly no days off, so you have to be down for the hustle.
