Meet Craig Steel of The Alchemist in West Palm Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Craig Steel.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
The Alchemist opened in October 2014. As a Gastropub, we aim to combine all the best elements of excellent quality food, a classic mixology-driven bar program, all served in a chill and relaxed environment.

After successful operations in the Boston area, Martha’s Vineyard and Philadelphia, the partners decided to open in South Florida to join the growing and maturing restaurant scene in the area.

At now three-and-a-half years old, The Alchemist has a great reputation for service, quality and consistency. Locals and vacationers alike flock to experience our eclectic and diverse food menu. From our small plates and tapas, to our wood-fire oven to our in house dry-aged USDA Prime filets, ribeyes, tomahawks and more. To our fantastic wine list featuring premium brands both by the bottle and by the glass. To our mixologist-created drink menu and specials featuring fire, smoke, ice and only the best brands of spirits.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The biggest struggle of operating a restaurant in our area is the workforce. Finding hard working, dedicated professionals in the hospitality industry is hard here. It took me a couple of years to find the right people to add to the team. Now, we have several of our team members that have been on the team for multiple years which makes our daily operation stronger and stronger. We have a strong core of “family” team members that through their dedication and commitment to the project, help us to get stronger every week.

Please tell us about The Alchemist.
As managing partner of The Alchemist, I run the day to day operations of the business. I do it all. From hiring and training, to running our social media accounts, to even designing and printing our menus.

As a company, we are proud to be on the forefront of the hospitality scene here in West Palm. We are known for having one of, if not the best bar program in the area. Our steak program was recognized by the Food Network as one of the best options in the country. In an area where most restaurants feature mozzarella sticks and nachos, we are proud to be offering USDA Prime steaks, the highest quality seafood and making everything in house. From all of our sauces and plates, even our desserts are home made.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
When I was 11, I moved from the south of England to the States. Although, it was a little scary at first as a youngster. Once, I got settled here and realized the opportunities that lay before me, I knew I was going to be on the road to success! My first job was at Wendy’s and literally from there, I knew I was going to be in love with the hospitality industry and would take it on as a career. And, I’m sure glad I did!
