Meet Christopher Coates and Susan Zuzka

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christopher Coates and Susan Zuzka.

Christopher and Susan, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Music has always been important to us in our lives. We both started studying music at a young age and went through our own different processes growing up. Always trying to improve and express ourselves, and we both felt like music was the best vessel to do that for us. Chris plays piano and synthesizers and collaborated with other musicians in the past. Susan primarily sings opera and pop and has sung at live events. We met by chance at a photo shoot at Rainbow Circus Miami and clicked right away. Chris had a music project he was working on and needed a female vocalist. So, we collaborated on some tracks shortly after, then realized that this could grow into more than just studio recordings. We formed our musical duo “Mindfelt” after recording for six months, then finished the album “We Are” in a little over a year.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Of course not! Nothing in life is handed to you, especially when you’re a musician! We spent a little over a year recording this beautiful album we were going to release at a live show. For months, we practiced our live set in anticipation of our first public performance during the Winter Music Conference 2020. But, it was canceled last minute due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Now we are unsure when our first show will be since the live event industry changed overnight, but we are excited for that day! We miss our friends, family, and fans, and we are looking forward to celebrating our lives, music, and experiences together again.

Can you give our readers some background on your music?
We create electronic pop and are heavily influenced by an eclectic range of music. We’re known for blending synths, live music, and emotional vocals. We have a sound that is unique to us, but some of our biggest musical influences are Fever Ray, Massive Attack, and Madonna. We are proud of our ability to make each song sound different, yet identifiable as our own. We feel like in Miami, there are so many DJs, reggaeton, and hip hop artists, but we are able to stand out by fusing live performance, classical, and electronic music in artistic ways.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
We pride ourselves on our ability to unite various art forms together to create a magical live experience for our audience. Susan is a versatile artist who blends singing with dance, intricate costumes, and circus arts. Chris is a classically trained musician who produces, writes, and experiments with various music genres. We are more than just a musical duo. We perform a wide range of different art forms all at once that can only be felt, seen and heard.
