Today we’d like to introduce you to Charity Deleon.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Charity. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Food has been my passion for most of my life. My grandparents raised me and grandfather was a butcher in Cuba and an amazing cook. I was always helping him and I believe that is where my love for food was born. I’ve always known I wanted to work with food in some aspect. In my teens and for most of my twenties I dreamed of owning my own restaurant but never made it happen. As I grew so did my family which meant more life celebrations and food was always the main ingredient as was dessert.
Almost nine years ago life circumstances would force me to stay home and care for one of the children who was born with special needs. It was during this time that I began to search within to find the direction I wanted to take to make my lifetime dream a reality. But by this time I had begun to dabble in desserts and the artistic side of me began to surface. I started decorating my kids birthday cakes and decided I wanted to go to culinary school.
When I went to tour the school I was so excited but it wasn’t until I walked down the Baking and Pastry wing of the school that my heart sang to me. As I stood there looking through the large windows at the beautiful art created with food that I realized that this was the direction I wanted to take. But life got in the way for another two years after that day before I went back. But I did and in 2015 I graduated from Lincoln Culinary Institute, from the International Baking and Pastry Program on the President’s List.
Just after graduation, I started my business. My focus is not only that my clients receive a beautiful work of art because my job is to bring their ideas to life in edible form. My goal is that my clients and their guests have a deliciously unforgettable experience.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has not been a smooth road, it is also an oversaturated market. There are many unlicensed non-professionals who are selling low-quality products for a very low price and this is very damaging to those of us who are trying to grow legitimately.
People don’t understand that when you order a custom gourmet cake or dessert item that item is made to order fresh from scratch using quality ingredients, it’s not sitting in a huge freezer waiting to just be put together like a commercial grocery store. They don’t understand that creating an edible work of art can take hours and even days to complete. Educating people is difficult, most people want quantity over quality but this is not what I am about. I believe you get what you pay for.
One of my biggest challenges has been balancing time. Additional to running my business I also work full time and have a large family as I am a mom of six, but I make it all work and I am grateful for it.
Please tell us about Cake Life Artisan Cakes.
At Cake Life Artisan Cakes I specialize in creating gourmet custom cakes, cupcakes, and a variety of desserts for any occasion. I take my clients ideas and bring them to life in edible form. I appreciate fresh, natural and high-quality ingredients and that’s how I feed my family. All my products are made using the same high standard of ingredients I use at home.
I am known for my fresh cakes and frosting, I have had clients who have never liked cake but absolutely love my cakes. When you use high-quality ingredients and make every order with love and appreciation it’s noticeable. And until you have something that is high quality you never really realize how different that product is from your everyday store-bought items.
I believe what sets me apart from others is that I truly value what I do and absolutely love creating masterpieces to bring joy to others. It’s not a job, it’s a passion. And, client satisfaction is truly important to me, I treat my clients the way I expect to be treated.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I had to start over I would not do anything differently. When I was starting my business and even recently it has been suggested to me that I should use cheap ingredients so I can sell my cakes cheaper. But that would go against everything I believe in, and I believe in my products.
I believe that there is a market out there for people who appreciate quality and a personalized experience and that care about what they put into their bodies, and for those people there is someone like me who can provide it.
A lesson learned is that starting anything is hard but just because it doesn’t happen overnight doesn’t mean it’s not going to happen. Success takes time and you should never give up, nothing that is ever worth it comes easy.
