Today we’d like to introduce you to Chantel Yearwood.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I was born and raised in Miami, Fl (specifically cutler ridge- now cutler bay). I always knew that I wanted to work in the health field. In high school, after being diagnosed with a sport injury, I knew that Physical Therapy was what I wanted to do. After completing my undergrad in Athletic Training I sought out a paid internship in VA. I later applied and was accepted into the Doctor of Physical Therapy program at the university where I interned. However, I had a set back (my fault), that landed me back in Florida- which I hadn’t planned. But God had another plan! During the chaos I remained steadfast and sought high and low for a place of employment where I could heal, refocus, and grow into the woman that I wanted to be. After finding that place at an Outpatient PT clinic in Tampa, Fl and 4 years in graduate school, I crossed the stage with with my Doctorate in Physical Therapy. I FINALLY felt What I thought was the top. But God had way more in store. Through many trials and error- within three years of practicing I became a clinical director and lead an amazing team of clinicians and support staff. Then came Covid-19 and everything changed. I felt many emotions- angry, disappointed, confused, hopeless then hopeful, unmotivated then inspired, looking for opportunities then creating opportunities….needless to say my emotions where all over the place. But after months of internal work I was fed up with complaining and decided to tap into my reserves for inspiration, creativity, and an open mind set. In doing so, opportunities started to find me, which led to the development of my very own Mobile PT Practice- “One Nine Physical Therapy and Wellness”. There were plenty of lessons learned, failures, and discovered strengths that got me to this point and looking forward to sharing more!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Much of the struggles I experienced were self inflicted. Self doubt, fear, and poor self value was a result of a lot of my hardships and setbacks. But I do feel many of the obstacles I faced prepared me for the position I’m in today. One major obstacle was when I was charged with DUI in VA and I thought my chances of being a PT were over. I don’t know how God did it, but It was later charged as reckless driving. That was a pivotable moment in my life though, where I realized I was going down a reckless path and I needed to refocus. That’s when I made the decision to move back to Florida to regroup and refocus.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the One Nine Physical Therapy and Wellness story. Tell us more about the business.
I recently started my business, “One Nine Physical Therapy (PT) and Wellness”, as of September 2020. We offer concierge physical therapy and wellness. We bring PT to your home, job or gym. We also offer virtual PT and wellness services, for those that are need of guidance but need the convenience of virtual therapy. Our goal is to empower women to take their health and wellness into their own hands through out all stages of their adult lives.. Their are little resources available to support women through the various seasons of our lives and I want to coach women in discovering their inner strength through physical therapy and wellness. As a Doctor of Physical Therapy and virtual wellness coach I specialize in treating and assessing musculoskeletal injuries (injuries involving bones, muscles, joints, and ligaments), incorporating fitness and wellness in my approach to rehab and injury prevention. I think what sets me apart has more to do with the way I do what I do, versus what I do. As a PT we solve problems. But my goal isn’t to just fix your problems- I want to coach you through the journey, acknowledging your fears, failures and insecurities that led you to me. Although we as a physical therapists are expected to address the physical limitations, I recognize how they can be the start or end result of emotional/mental limitations that manifest in other areas of our lives. So I address it all! One rep at a time.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Growing up I was far more bold and confident than I was in my teen years lol. But I’ve always been extremely determined, willing to work for what I want and creative. I was a dancer (always appreciated visual/performing arts- still do) and was a collector. I’m laughing thinking about it. I collected rocks (that I painted), figurines from McDonald’s and trolls lol! I don’t know. I was very hyper and an only child. So I would prance around everywhere and annoy the crap out of my older female cousins. But they still love me. I grew up with solid family support. They strongly believe it takes a village to raise a child. My mom was a single mother, but I was blessed to still have a relationship with my father. They both are a huge part of who I am and where I am today. I also grew up in a christian household, which to me was strict growing up. BUT it’s my faith that keeps me together now- so I’m forever thankful.
