Today we’d like to introduce you to Cassandra Salas.
Cassandra, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Well, I’ve been selling my cakes/desserts for a few years now, but the actual interest in baking has been in me forever! It all started one summer where I decided hey let’s learn how to bake! So I started by watching YouTube videos and practicing, all summer long it was video, practice, video, practice, etc. (you can say my family is all deserted out at this point!).
After I “perfected” skill after skill I started to sell to friends and family. Super cheap of course. The joy that my creation gave them made me feel so happy inside. And that same feeling happened & still happens to this day EVERY TIME I show a customer their order.
Right there, I knew this was something I HAD to do for the rest of my life, I needed to feel that everyday. Fast forward, my senior year of high school was quickly ending when I decided why go to a university & settle for a career I sort of like when I can go to school and have a career where I wake up in the morning loving my life & can’t wait to wake up the next morning to do it all over again so culinary school it was!
With the strong support of my parents & siblings (HI MOM) I enrolled in Le Cordon Bleu- Miami. There I met some seriously talented chefs I’m lucky to call friends and was taught by some amazing chefs & professors! Culinary school although was tough was the greatest experience I’ve ever had, I loved it each and every single day.
After graduation I started focusing on Cassy’s Cakes a lot more especially since I truly mastered some more skills (ps a chef/pastry chef never stops learning so I use the term mastered very loosely!) & well here we are two years after graduation & I have the most lovely customer base that grows more & more everyday. I genuinely love what I do & I couldn’t be any luckier to be able to have friends & family that have supported me all this way!
Has it been a smooth road?
Is anything ever a smooth road? Haha. I mean I’m not saying I had no pavement, but there sure were some big rocks and potholes along the way and still are sometimes. But I wouldn’t be where I am today without them!
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I am a home bakery at the moment, but my goal is to eventually have enough customers where I can open up a physical shop! Don’t worry I’m still licensed & insured. 🙂
I specialize in cake decorating. But I can pretty much do anything dessert-wise. Besides cakes, I also offer all types of desserts! Like cupcakes, cake pops, macarons, cookies, dessert shooters, cheesecakes, doughnuts, French pastries, etc. literally everything. & if I don’t know how to do it, guess what? I bring out my handy dandy YouTube & teach myself!
I feel like what sets me apart from other amazing bakeries is my customer service. I treat, well I try to treat every customer like a friend or family member from the moment you ask me for a quote to the moment you pick up your order. I honestly get excited for you when I finish your order. I get so happy at the fact that I can send this to you and know you’re going to love it because I love it! (& trust me I have high standards especially when since my mom is a perfectionist haha)
I love getting pictures of kids with their cakes especially when they start eating the frosting while singing happy birthday haha. I’m lucky to have had some customers for years now & they’ve been able to see my work grow with every order it’s a special connection.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I love this city & I always will business or no business! But hey cake and desserts is something that’s almost always in demand so why not have it in an area filled with some great people!
For people just starting out it may seem like there’s an overpopulation of people doing the same thing as you but don’t let that bring you down.
Bring something to the table that some other people may not have whether it be a product or just your personality. You think positive in your business, and your business will reward you positively.
