Today we’d like to introduce you to Carlos E Colon.
Carlos empowers his clients to take charge of their retirement by keeping them involved in every step of the way. A former fighter and coach, his approach to Risk Management is; “It is a contact sport and my responsibility is to coach my clients to make an informed decision. I want my clients to retire in the RIGHT way. I want to know what their goals are and what they are trying to accomplish. Only then, am I able to recommend to them the right personalized solutions. This isn’t a one-size-fits-all business and I take that very seriously. My ultimate goal is to always provide more in value than what I take in payment.”
Prior to joining The Villages Insurance in February of 2019, Carlos and his wife Joslyn owned an agency in Columbus, Ohio for a number of years. His focus has always been on the Retirement and Risk Management side. Their agency was ranked among the best in the region receiving recognition from both clients and the community. Unfortunately, when his mother (a Florida resident) started experiencing some health issues, he made the decision to move to The Villages area to be close to her. It has been a blessing in disguise as his mother’s health has been steadily improving and the opportunity to join The Villages Insurance as Managing Advisor for the Retirement Group allowed him to continue the career he’s truly passionate about. “I believe that as citizens of the world, we are called to make a positive difference and leave this world a little better than we found it. I am looking forward to doing so in The Villages.”
Carlos has been doing sales for over 20 years. He began his career in the automotive industry where he was consistently among the top 5 before becoming Master Certified with Ford Motor Co. and moving into management. His first exposure to the insurance industry came when he began selling extended warranties and GAP Insurance. From there he went on to become a Sales Manager for one of the largest Marketing Firms in the Nation that provided telecom services to businesses. While there, Carlos and three of his colleagues created pilot programs for companies such as Verizon and AT&T, he was a pivotal component for the growth of these companies in California. But it was when his grandfather passed away from pancreatic cancer in 2010, that Carlos made the decision to focus on Insurance and Risk Management, seeing the difficulties that his own family had to go through during this process. His success in the insurance industry has also allowed him to venture into other fields, such as Real Estate investing and owning a couple of other businesses.
Carlos is licensed in all major lines; Property, Casualty, Life, Health, Disability, Long-Term Care, and Annuity. Carlos is also a licensed REALTOR, Licensed Boxing Coach, Licensed Boxing Judge, and currently licensed to do insurance in Florida, Ohio, Texas, and South Carolina. His specialties are: Retirement Strategies, Life Insurance, Long-Term Care, and Annuities.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has not been a smooth road. I’ve struggled through my career just like the next guy. Sales can be a volatile career when you start in the industry. With no client base or network, every move, you start from scratch and have to prove yourself.
I’ve also struggled due to my background. It took years for me to finally recognize that I deserved to be successful because I am willing to put in the work. For many years, I was my biggest enemy. Every time I started to achieve a certain level of success, I would sabotage myself and kept myself at a “comfortable” level. It was almost like being successful beyond what I thought I deserved was scary.
That along with all the curve balls that life throws your way…
Please tell us about The Villages Insurance.
Our company specializes in Financial Services through insurance products. We only create safe strategies for our clients that have minimal risk and decent returns. We use a combination of annuities, long-term care, and life strategies to accomplish this.
We are proud of servicing our clients and providing them with conservative strategies that can get them through retirement successfully.
We use a proprietary process call VVIP: TVIP’s Value Inspection Plan. Using this system we are able to provide our clients with an actual financial plan that they can take with them and know exactly what their gaps in coverage and portfolio are.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I would have been selective from the start on what carriers to represent and what clients to specifically work with.
When you first start in the business, you’re just happy to have a client. However, as you get more experienced you realized that not all clients are created equal. At times, the client that nets you the smallest revenues gives you the biggest problems.
It’s not about revenues only, its about spending time wisely in order to be able to service clients the best way possible by eliminating the transaction and focusing on the relationships.
