Today we’d like to introduce you to Joselin Chiu.
Joselin, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Ironically, my mortgage career began in my sophomore year of high school-early 2000’s. I began as a front desk receptionist, sharing daily rate sheets, inputting new loan applications into our processing queue; and quickly moved into the junior processor role, learning the order and importance of all the documentation needed by an underwriter to fully review and underwrite a loan application. With the market collapse of 2008, I faced many challenges (like many of us) and decided to pursue an education in Psychology. Upon working on the completion of my Masters in Behavioral Psychology at FIU and anxiously seeing my student loan debt rising along with the frustration of the lack of flexibility in my psychology career, I decided that I would return to real estate to help offset some of my higher education debt and allow for me to share more time with my children.
I returned to real estate in early 2013 and began with a local direct lender as their in-house recruiter and office manager. This position allowed me to come back into the industry and get ”my feet wet” with all the new changes since the collapse. Little did I know, that my psychology practices would create a powerful foundation of what now is my solid mortgage business system. I learned from my recruiting strategies, in combination with my psychology practices; how to consciously listen to my client’s concerns, goals and desires; and effectively communicate and structure options to preparing them for their best plan of action to reach their goals. I unified my degree in Psychology with my love for real estate; and now merged the birthing of my passion to help families move forward. This is something that has truly allowed me to thrive not only in the quality of service I provide to my clients as home buyers; but also to my business partners as we thrive to grow and expand our businesses together.
Has it been a smooth road?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. Like any masterpiece, I have faced many challenges. From market changes to income fluctuations. competing- or better said- being compared to other lenders with bad practices. Finding “home” within an organization that not only understands but also supports, my purpose-driven business model; and the goals I have in place to make an impact in our industry and our home buyers. The learning curves of finding professionals to partner with that see the larger picture of providing good service, being in mission- to help families, our clients; and learning to set boundaries and turning business and partnerships down that do not align with my purpose and goal.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
I am currently a licensed mortgage professional with Caliber Home Loans. I specialize in residential home lending, from condos’ to single-family homes, to investment purchases. I LOVE, LOVEE, my first-time home-buyer families because it truly allows my mission to shine bright… guiding families through one of their largest purchases and investments. Educating families of all that is to come in their buying process, all the options they have available and using my psychology mind to help them find their way to what fits their goals and vision best. I am known for my client-solution focus plan of execution. I tailor my services to what is in their goals, how do we get there?, what will it take to achieve this?, I break it down for my families in our plan of action. I am not your 2-hour response pre-qualification lender with no real research on the prospective buyer. My pre-approval letters have power! They are solid because I take my time to get to know my buyers, create a relationship with them, their family, their needs. I am transparent and set clear expectations as to which loan options may be best for a quick move or if waiting another 12-24 months may really place them in a more powerful purchase place. I focus my business on tailoring to their wants and needs, not closing another deal. I nurture my relationships for life. Once I make contact, I am that lender to reach out to them on birthdays, mothers day, tax season, homestead deadlines. I proudly build a relationship for life, with my clients and my partners- because this is my career for life, I practice my license with passion- Every Day! At Caliber Home Loans, my team is truly my backbone. In the 15+ years, I have experience in the Real Estate financing industry in South Florida, I have never had a company whose support and practices of accountability, truly support my business model and the way I service my business. We are committed to transparency, communication and relationship building. I am honored to be a part of Caliber.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I believe that Miami, South Florida in general, is one of the top 3 best cities to build a Real Estate Business. It is so ever-changing, always in high demand, and has such a variety of “niches”. There is no limit to what you can build here! This would be an amazing opportunity for anyone looking to start their real estate career. However, I strongly believe that our city, can and should be, more mindful and more disciplined with how many people are getting licensed and they way they are doing business in this industry and we should be more regulated for ethically ran practices.
