Meet Brian Neu of Island Harbor Custom Builders in Sebastian

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brian Neu.

Brian, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Grew up in a construction family in Lima, OH. Mother and father operated a general contracting company that was founded by my grandfather in 1965. Graduated from Ohio State University in 2008 with a degree in Construction Systems Management. Worked as a project manager at various companies throughout the United States and New Zealand. Met my wife while working in Maui in 2013. Moved back to Ohio 2015 to be closer to family, but my Hawaiian wife could not handle the winters so we moved to Florida shortly thereafter. Worked for Barth Construction building high-end custom homes while studying/testing for a Florida Contractor License. After receiving my contractor’s license from the state, I left Barth to Start Island Harbor Custom Builders.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Building codes are somewhat uniform from state to state but the areas of enforcement/concern can vary greatly from state to state. For example, in Ohio, we are not concerned with the threat of hurricanes, but in Florida, any item that is attached to the exterior of a structure needs to have a product approval that details the products, ability to withstand various wind-speeds and how to properly install the product to meet those requirements. In South Florida, there is not much concern for water pipes freezing due to exterior temperatures, but in Ohio, you’re required to bury all water lines at least 36″ below grade. These are obvious examples, but it helps illustrate the struggles that you might incur while doing construction in different areas.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Island Harbor Custom Builders story. Tell us more about the business.
We are a licensed and insured custom builder specializing in new commercial and residential projects and remodels. We specifically focus on project management. Our business is designed to take a project from start to completion in the most efficient way possible. Our clients benefit from our experience and knowledge of local subcontractors and material suppliers. Due to the large volume of work we oversee, we are able to get better pricing and scheduling than a smaller builder or homeowner would be able to. Our communication sets us apart, we believe that clear and honest communication is the keystone of a healthy relationship.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I’ve always liked this old saying: “I’m a great believer in luck. The harder I work, the more luck I have.”
