Today we’d like to introduce you to Brenda Tillman.
Brenda, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I have been writing for years. I love to write lyrics, creative pieces, and poems. I believe it is a gift from God. I find peace in my writing. I have written poetry pieces for clients as a ghostwriter, plays for churches, and lyrics to songs which I have recorded.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The obstacles will always be in place. Learning how to maneuver around them is key. When I started my first book, “Sanctified Freak, the Spirit & Flesh are Contrary,” it seemed like EVERYTHING was stopping me. I became a single mother of 4, so I stopped and didn’t make it pass that obstacle. Kids were getting older becoming teenagers and, whew, you know how that goes. So, I stopped again. Then my dad passed and I stopped again, but to tell this story was in my belly and I couldn’t shake it. Then I tried again and my job informed me that if I wanted a promotion that I would have to obtain a college degree (at 40). So, I realized that my obstacle was avoidance. The obstacle wasn’t moving, they never do, it’s like a speed bump. No matter how many times I go down a road with one on it, it’s always gonna be there to slow you down. So, I decided to just do it. I went to school and took a creative writing class and jumped back into the book. I decided that I was not going to AVOID anymore, I was just gonna DANCE around the obstacles that caused avoidance of my gift birthing what I believe God has anointed me to do.
Please tell us about BYSmith Writes.
BYSmith Writes, writes and ministers the word of God on YouTube as “A Minute in the Word with BYSmith.” What I am proud of and what sets me apart from others is that I write and talk about real-life issues. Obstacles that distract us because of the flesh we live in.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite memory from childhood is my daddy making me go to work with him when I got in trouble at school. My dad was my hero. I loved how he loved my mom and his kids.
