Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandi Toole.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Growing up, I always loved photography. I was constantly taking photos and learning more about editing and shooting but for some reason I never thought of it as a career option. I initially had my sights set on Counseling when I started undergrad at the University of Georgia. While in undergrad, I was always the annoying friend with a camera and always did photo sessions for friends, but it still ever clicked that photography was what I was supposed to be doing.
After graduating with my degree in Psychology, I got married and my husband and I (and adorable dog) decided to move to New York City. While I still loved psychology, the field is pretty limited in what you can do without a doctorate degree. So instead of spending over 200k on graduate school, I decided to rethink my career path.
I worked a lot of random jobs, from retail to being a nanny. Eventually, I somehow ended up working at a wedding videography company, with zero experience in the wedding industry. Maybe my boss felt bad for a struggling recent college grad, or maybe he saw something in me that I didn’t. I loved shooting weddings every weekend and being able to be a part of the happiest day of a lot of people’s lives. But I still felt like videography wasn’t my true calling. So instead, I took photography off the back burner and began taking photographs and branching out on my own.
Fast forward a few years, and I’m living in Miami and running my own business, being able to shoot weddings full time both in Florida and around the world.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Self-doubt has always been my biggest struggle, even today. Photography is such a competitive field and it’s easy to get in your own head and compare yourself to photographers. When I moved to Miami from New York, it felt like a new beginning, and at the same time, brought a lot of hesitation and insecurity. I spent a lot of time learning how not to compare myself and my successes to other photographers. And as a result, I was able to take a step back and look at the work I was putting in and how much improvement I’ve made over the years. Getting out of my own head has allowed me to take more risks and opportunities when they present themselves.
Please tell us about Brandi Toole Photography.
I am a full-time wedding and engagement photographer. I love working with creative and adventurous couples and capturing their personalities in a photojournalistic candid way.
My hope is to create images that will tell their story beautifully and authentically for years to come.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I can’t say if I would have done anything differently. While I may have made different decisions or taken different opportunities, everything that I have done up until this point has brought me here. It’s easy to speculate that maybe I would be in a different place, but I’m more focused on the present and how I can move forward.
