Meet Bill Reicherter of Priority 1 Signs in Pompano Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bill Reicherter.

Bill, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
The journey started in 1991 when I was a college football player looking to go pro. Although I never started out with the intention of ever working and only playing football it seems my life’s direction took me here. I had a friend that was in the sign business and I would help him hang window signs in the offseason and when I was home from school. I always thought to myself the creative side of the business was cool and found it interesting that he was getting paid to create a product and deliver it. So as time went on and I was training for the professional football player life I found out that my dream to play in the NFL would be short-lived. I attended a few combines and never made it to the dance so now I had to make it happen in the real world. Falling back on my so-called sign helper days I decided to open, not work but open my own sign company. With no money, no experience I was about to embark on a long painstaking journey of competing in a world I had no idea needed so much experience. Unlike my friend, I wanted to be in the entire business. Making large electrical signs and making my mark not just hanging banners and window signs. So I started taking signs off buildings for free to learn how to fabricate them. I would spend my nights dumpster driving to get information on potential clients and vendors so I could build my business. Figured that money was in numbers so I decided to chase the franchise and corporate business. In my spare bedroom, I created my office with a cell phone, fax and computer. Calling on clients I would tell them we are one of the largest sign companies in the country and I was looking to help them run their national sign programs. Mind you I had no Idea how to do this but I knew I could figure it out. My next problem was I thought my office was too quiet when I called people so I had to find a way to make it sound like there was a factory in the background. So I went outside picked up a rock and starting banging on the desk while I was on the phone and ask my client to excuse the noise I am in my factory inspecting the sign manufacturing. All this was great however I was making no money, losing my butt on all jobs because I didn’t have a correct pricing guide so now I was hiding my cars from repo, turning my electrical back on after FPL shut it off, and running from creditors in pursuit of building this company. Fast forward 5 years, it started getting better as I was gaining ground, making money and building my dream. Now 25 years later we are among the largest in the country, rated number 1 by Prime Buyers Report and handling effectively and efficiently some of the top brands in the country. We have completed over 10,000 jobs all across the world and I am known as an industry expert. Our work is even on TV featured on THE PROFIT, and we were personally found and hired by THE PROFIT himself, Marcus Lemonis. I have been written up in Entrepreneur Magazine and graced the cover of the International Franchise Magazine twice. It’s been a long journey but like everything in life, if you want it bad enough and push towards your dream everyday relentlessly you will make it.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The biggest struggle was starting a business with no real business experience just guts and ambition. Other struggles included learning and understanding the product I was selling and how to price for profit. I recommend if you start a business, be smart and work in the industry for years and gain as much knowledge as possible before starting your own venture.

Priority 1 Signs – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My business is not about me, it’s about my staff and my clients. We are known to have the best product in the industry, our customer service second to none and our delivery times are at a 97% one-time ratio. Actually, the building department permit process is the only reason it’s not 100%. I also make myself the leading industry expert by publishing a book, speaking at events on branding, consistency and effectively running a national program. I also used the court system to get hired as an expert witness defending clients in sign cases. What sets me apart is the US, the entire company, and culture. When people see the P1 brand they know it stands for quality.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I define success by doing what you love for a living and creating a life based on what you love. What I strive for every day is to learn more about new opportunities that set us further apart, make sure our employees have the best tools in the industry and best work environment around. Those are my markers. Competition at this point is meaningless as I feel we will always be the one to beat. My competitive nature from sports never ever lets me be second to anyone. So we will always be the leader.
