Meet Barbara Alfonzo of Healthy Sexy Green in Delray Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Barbara Alfonzo.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Hi! I’m Barbara. A Holistic Health Coach, Yoga Teacher, Performer, and a self-proclaimed Self–Care Agent committed to helping women become more Healthy, Sexy, & Green. I believe that at the root of all positive change we want to create in our lives, we must begin with self-love; and the path to self-love is through self-care.

My philosophy is simple: Eat foods that came from the earth and have been touched by the sun (Healthy). Be present and aware of your thoughts, words, actions and how they are shaping your life (Sexy). Honor mother earth, be mindful of the material things you acquire and how you dispose of them (Green).

I am a certified Budokon® Yoga Instructor from Budokon®University, a certified Health Coach with the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, a Yoga Alliance certified Karma Vinyasa Yoga Instructor from 305 University, an AcroYoga International certified AcroFit Trainer, and a Stoked Yogi Stand-Up Paddleboard Yoga Instructor. I have been practicing yoga since 2006 and teaching since 2010.

Want to get to know me a little better? Here’s how my journey has lead me to where I am now… I studied fashion merchandising in college. After graduating I landed a job with a company I absolutely adored called Ecoist, that made and sold eco-friendly accessories. This was a dream job for a girl that was president of the Eco-Club in high school. I was able to combine two of my passions- fashion and green living.

In 2006 I ended a four-year relationship and was looking to shake things up in my life.

For the first time ever I enrolled in a gym- South Beach Equinox. Equinox, at the time, employed the best yoga instructors in Miami. This is where my yoga journey began. I was exposed to Budokon, Vinyasa, Ashtanga, Hatha, Acro Yoga, Kundalini, and restorative yoga practices. My life was changing in amazing ways! I was learning so much! I felt a veil being lifted as I saw a world of new possibilities.

In January of 2009 I was laid off from Ecoist and later that year experienced unexpected heartbreak. Single and unemployed I dedicated that year to traveling and going deeper into my yoga practice. It was an exciting year of personal growth. I was able to travel back to where I grew up, Venezuela; and to Thailand to explore and experience a culture I had never been exposed to before. That year I also tested for my Budokon blue belt and received my first yoga instructor accreditation as a certified Budokon Yoga Instructor.

In 2010 a job I never imagined found me! It was exciting and lucrative so I took the plunge and became a professional go-go dancer in Miami’s South Beach’s top nightclubs! This job opened up a side of me I didn’t know existed. I was a natural on stage and really enjoyed performing. My self-confidence skyrocketed, I was making great money, traveling around the country, and having way too much fun! I would dance during the night, and lounge at the beach and spa during the day. Dance, beach, spa, repeat. I was single and living la Vida Loca!

I was living the South Beach dream life! So I thought… My yoga practice had slipped away. I had really bad sleeping patterns, unhealthy eating and drinking habits, automatic negative thinking patterns, body pain from joint inflammation, hair loss, and skin problems. I was very fit, but I was not healthy. My body could only take this lifestyle for 2 years. In early 2011 I suffered a female health condition that took me a year to cure. It was clear- I needed a major shift in my life.

In 2012 after looking to make some serious health changes in my life I decided to enroll in the Institute for Integrative Nutrition. It was the best decision I ever made. I stopped dancing, I went back to yoga, and I took the year off from work to study full time. As I began to learn more about nutrition and wellness, I realized it is easy to create a healthy lifestyle when you have the right support system. Having my own health coach and accountability partner changed my life and health.

In 2013 I became a certified Health Coach and a certified Vinyasa Karma Yoga Instructor. I also started education in B-School, an online business program. Since then I have been health coaching and teaching yoga full time! I have created a life that I am passionate about. Every day it is my pleasure to learn more and to share my wisdom with my students and clients.

Having gone through my own personal struggle with health and lifestyle balance, I am living evidence that we can create whatever life we want for ourselves. I feel passionate to be able to share my experiences and knowledge with others, so they too can create the healthy lifestyle they desire.

Deep in my core, I truly believe that all positive shifts begin with self-care and self-love. This is why I’ve created Healthy Sexy Green, to offer services that provide nutrition, movement, and mindset training for women who are ready to make positive changes in their lives but don’t know where to begin.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has not been a smooth road at all, and I was not expecting it to be. I know all great things come with great effort, commitment, and dedication. With so many yoga teachers, health coaches in the world right now it is important to stay current, relevant, honest, and be myself so that I can attract the students and clients that desire to work with me.

Please tell us about Healthy Sexy Green.
I teach women to take care of themselves through the way they eat, think, move and shop, this work creates a ripple effect that affects their family, community and the world at large. I am known to connect people with teachers, experiences, and products that change their lives for the better.

I am proud of my company because I do necessary work. I teach people to take care of themselves so they can love themselves more. Because when we love ourselves we make better choices with the things we put in/on/around our body, mind, and external environment.

What sets me apart? I am the only Barbara Alfonzo, there is only 1 person like me and my vibe attracts the people that resonate and connect with my message.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I had to start over, I would’ve kept writing blogs as I was in the beginning.
