Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Lucas and Ashley Koranteng.
So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
We met each other on the campus of George Mason University, at an event called “Train Like An Alpha.” We exchanged contact information to allow us to practice the routines that were taught. The subsequent summer, we both made each other aware of our dreams to establish a mentorship program for young girls, and immediately we knew our prayers had been answered! June 6, 2018, marks the date of our answered prayers. The next day we started working on a business plan, and the rest is history. Rise and Thrive Inc. launched September 29, 2019.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Our greatest challenge thus far has been regarding business etiquette. For example, we ran into a few challenges with men in multiple industries not taking us seriously, or speaking to us in unprofessional ways because we are young women in business.
We would advise any ladies who experience the same unprofessionalism that we have in the past to not tolerate disrespect solely because they are a woman; but instead, build connections with individuals who are respectful, appreciate them, and see their value. We would also advise ladies to not become discouraged if something like this happens to them; realize the way people treat you has nothing to do with your character, but speaks volumes to the type of person they are.
Rise and Thrive – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Rise and Thrive Inc. is a multifaceted mentorship program for the empowerment of young ladies partnering with schools in the DMV, as well as hosting virtual mentorship programs. Our mission is to cultivate a community of young ladies who will grow into women who are confident, intelligent, and leaders in all aspects of life through mentorship, education, and experience.
Rise and Thrive, explores nine signature elements including: self-love, etiquette, healthy lifestyles, professional development, finances, academic enrichment, social media, healthy relationships, and safety in today’s world.
As a newly launched business, we are most proud of selling out a 180-person venue for our launch party, which was hosted on September 29, 2020.
Rise and Thrive is different from most mentorship programs because we focus on areas outside of academics and careers. We support young ladies in areas that determine how well they can succeed in the overarching topics, such as academic and career categories. Some of the key elements we include that are not always taught in one-dimensional education related programs include finances, self-love, social media and safety. Rise and Thrive is also different from others because it is founded by two young black entrepreneurs chasing their dreams alongside of the young ladies we mentor. Our youth and combination of different backgrounds allow us to personally relate to our mentees and give them real-life advice. We serve to bridge the gap between teachers and students and between parents and their children by creating a safe space for young girls to gain knowledge on different topics ranging from academics to self-love alongside having a lifelong mentor.
