Today we’d like to introduce you to Art Friedrich.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Started in 2010, Urban Oasis Project is on a mission to make fresh local food accessible and available to everyone. They run multiple farmers markets, included the “best of 2016” Upper Eastside Farmers Market at Legion Park. They create authentic markets with actual farms and local produce as the focus, generating community engagement and supporting many small artisan food vendors. In 2018 they began curating Market Mondays at the Arsht Center. SNAP benefits are accepted and the value is doubled for fresh produce at all markets.
In addition to markets, UOP does many educational speaking engagements, and works with many small farms to support them. Over their history, they’ve started over 100 small home gardens with low income families at their homes.
Has it been a smooth road?
UOP has run two different farms directly, one on a very small scale, and one massive, 22 acre farm call Verde Farm. They got Verde farm certified organic after many years and produced lots of veggies, but financial support to get it fully off the ground and self-sustaining fell short. Thankfully, the groundwork we laid is now being utilized by a new farmer organization.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Urban Oasis Project – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
We specialize in bringing fresh local produce from over 12 farms to markets and connecting customers with cooking ideas, new ingredients and health tips.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Tropical fruits! There’s so many to explore and to love!
My biggest dislike is the way so many markets and restaurants pretend to feature local produce but have very little commitment to it.
