Meet Anthony Salcedo of Athlon RUB in Brickell

Today we’d like to introduce you to Anthony Salcedo.

Anthony, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
In 2008 I was a Finance Director for a subsidiary of one of the largest and most revered companies in the world based on Lincoln Road, SOBE. One Friday afternoon, I was unexpectedly advised that it would be my last day of work. The company was making a lot of money but unable to reach the incredibly unrealistic revenue stretch goals they had applied to the budget models.  Senior management was concerned about missing their income goals and making their bonus.  One month prior, I had just purchased my new home using all of my savings and then some since banks were not financing easily. The economy had just entered a recession.

At that time, I decided to put my efforts into starting a business in an industry I loved versus seeking employment where I was just a number. As a huge fan of Martial Arts / MMA, I put my energy into becoming the North America distributor for a revered   athletic & recovery Thai product used in Muay Thai (Thai Boxing), a core martial art in MMA. The initial challenge was that this product was not FDA registered and the Thai Manufacturer required that I produce the FDA registration for them first.  After much learning and little help, FDA registration was achieved and I started my new venture with Thai Oil.  Throughout the years of the distribution agreement, the relationship with the MFG was riddled with challenges. The 12 hour time difference made communication challenging and always required me to interrupt my sleep to call late nights and early morning as the Thai MGF never initiated contact and had a totally different sense of urgency and business culture.  I also had no success in having the MFG protect my North America territory from non-authorized importers. In the end and after several signs, I realized that I was utilized to handle the FDA requirements and setup the foundation for their entry into the North American Market; a long term relationship was not desired.  At the end of multi-year agreement, I had stop representing their brand and decide my next career move.  After the years of hard work, factoring in my strong familiarity with the formula, the product properties, the issues with the packaging, etc; I knew I could enhance the product on many many levels.

Athlon Rub was born, Athlon is an ancient Greek word meaning many challenges and battles and the root word for three Olympic sports.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Absolutely not smooth sailing.  We struggled with our first production run not having the right desired consistency and warming profile after going through months of test runs and final approvals.  This hurt bad as we launched our brand in-conjunction with an Athlon Rub  three day tournament we organized inside one of the largest fitness expos in the country.  We later encountered some issues with some of the containers or tops being discontinued slowing down our supply chain and requiring us to pivot.  Ultimately, these challenges taught us many lessons and served to improve the final product and our quality control processes.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
Too many people to mention from athletes that love and promote our product, to coaches who know what product to trust for their students, and to a therapist who honor us when using Athlon Rub with their clients. I am grateful to all.
