Today we’d like to introduce you to Angela Taylor.
Angela, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I am a mother of two, stepmother to four, a widow, and a breast cancer survivor. In July 2017, I was diagnosed with Triple Negative breast cancer, I battled five months of chemotherapy, followed by a bi lateral mastectomy. I wanted to give back to woman by sharing the importance of first detection mammography.
Not allowing fear to dictate something that perhaps we feel, or know of something that should look into – a mammogram can save your life! The feeling of isolation, our mind can let us believe that we are only a person going through this experience when we feel a lump or have pain in our breast. We owe it to YOURSELVES, if we feel something, say something. Being diagnosed with breast cancer doesn’t make it a death sentence. For some, not having health insurance makes the uncertainty even more despairing.
That’s when I discovered how I was to EXERCISE my gift, by forming a nonprofit organization to let women know that we are not alone and one of the best ways to deal with difficulties is to put your best energy into staying positive as much as possible,
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The hardest part of my journey was going through my chemotherapy treatments without the support of my family and close circle of friends. I recently moved to South Florida just four years ago.
We’d love to hear more about your organization.
ARTfullAngels, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization was birthed in December 2018, our mission of our organization is to provide financial support for screening mammography, diagnostic breast imaging and breast cancer care for the uninsured and underserved women in Broward and Miami Dade counties. We partner with medical facilities in South Florida to deliver these services.
It is wonderful to have a variety of breast cancer awareness and advocacy organizations in South Florida, I believe it’s even greater to have a non profit dedicated to provide women that are too scared to know their truth about something that they may feel about their breasts, or knowing that its been way too long since their last mammogram because of the financial burden.
More importantly to know that someone “gets it”, truly being able to identify with the thoughts of the disease or even for those that have been diagnosed and having too many opinions from loved ones in their hearing about what you should do with your body. I’ve been there and one year and six months later I’m still speaking with woman who are going through treatment and or about to go through surgery and not sure of who to talk to.
Something amazing happens when your talking to someone who doesn’t know you, or about your family history, but knows exactly the fear and the uncertainty your facing. – It brings us together!
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I desire to grow ARTfullAngels with delivering these free mammography services to woman in a mobile vehicle that will ride in communities on a monthly basis in Broward and Miami Dade counties. Also to build more on the online platform, of the round table talks of “Cloaked by the Ribbon” conversations.
