Meet Angela Dugan of Dugan & Dame in Boca Raton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Angela Dugan.

Angela, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Dugan & Dame started as a passion project with my husband and I. I have spent many years from Las Vegas to Florida behind the bar and took over the bar program in our restaurant in Boca. I have always curated my own cocktail ingredients such as tonics, syrups, bitters, etc. in order to get a flavor profile and quality that rarely can be found in the market. I love being in the kitchen, have a master’s in Holistic Nutrition and am studying herbalism. This became a perfect synergy to create cocktail ingredients in traditional manners utilizing real botanicals that actually can provide an added healing benefit beyond just a great flavor for a cocktail. After much discussion and dreaming, we decided to partner with our good friend who is a graphic designer and created Dugan & Dame. The challenge lies in the fact that we tried to launch this company when our son was only four months old and I was trying to finish up my master’s degree. The timing was horrible and we had to put it on the back burner. I continued to tweak my recipes and processes and three and a 1/2 years later, we finally officially launched Dugan & Dame. Now our son, who is four, actually is a big part of the company. He helps us harvest some of our ingredients and loves learning about what we are doing. So much so that he’s always ‘making tonics’ in his play kitchen.

Has it been a smooth road?
The biggest struggle was when we first tried to launch the company. Being that I am the one building the recipes and making the products I couldn’t find the time to commit to the business so we decided to put it on hold indefinitely until the right time finally came. Originally we wanted Dugan & Dame to be a unique online retail market and started running with spice blend, oils, and vinegars as well as the tonics and bitters. We discovered relatively quickly that our niche resided in the tonics and bitters. We tried to outsource our recipes but never could find a company that could come close to our flavor profile. I use an old-world decoction method of extracting the flavors and medicinal constituents from the plants to make the tonics. After many tries, we finally gave up and realized that the only way for us to keep our unique flavor and profile is to make our products ourselves. So then, reworking schedules in order to have enough supply became a priority. We became strapped on cash to keep expanding the company so we looked to kickstarter. A successful campaign allowed us to then get FDA approval, launch a couple of new products and get picked up by a distributor.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Dugan & Dame – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
We specialize in tonics and bitters and have plans for expanding the line and adding on additional cocktail mixers and enhancers. We are different than almost every other tonic and bitters company on the market because of our method of production and quality of product. We only used organic and wildcrafted botanicals and organic sugarcane. We believe in the quality of our product, not just the flavor we are aiming for. The Florida waterways have been devastated by the sugarcane industry so we refuse to use anything other than Florida Organic Sugarcane. There’s no flavor enhancers or artificial ingredients. We use an old-world method of decocting the plants in order to not only get our unique flavor profile but to also extract specific constituents from the plants that are beneficial to those who imbibe. Our botanicals for our bitters are extracted individually in varying proofs of alcohol then blended. Again, this is done to extract the medicinal constituents of the plant as well as to gain specific flavor profiles.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love the cultural diversity and how that diversity brings a variety of ideas, beliefs and knowledge together. It makes the world not seem so big.
Why ever focus on whatnots to like since there is so much beauty in this city and all the cities around us?
