Meet Andre, Arelis van den Berg and Richard Paolillo of Landshore Enterprises

Today we’d like to introduce you to Andre, Arelis van den Berg and Richard Paolillo.

André van den Berg arrived in the United States in 2000 from South Africa. In South Africa, André obtained an engineering degree while working for the national police. After starting a construction company in South Africa, André moved to the United States to pursue entrepreneur ambitions. Arelis arrived in the United States in 2000 from Puerto Rico. In Puerto Rico, Arelis obtained a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration-Accounting from the University of Puerto Rico. Arelis began working for a CPA firm and performing consulting work for the government of Puerto Rico. After arriving in the United States, Arelis worked in the petroleum delivery industry for 10 years. André and Arelis met in 2004 and married in 2008. André serves as the President and Chief Executive Officer of Landshore® Enterprises, LLC, and Arelis as its Chief Financial Officer. Richard Paolillo, Office Coordinator, is the author and editor of much of the company’s text and materials, including this interview. Richard Paolillo is a student at the University of South Florida. Richard’s writing experience includes serving as a contributor for the State of the U, a University of Miami athletics blog, hosted by SB Nation and Vox Media.

Landshore® Enterprises, LLC, a shoreline restoration and beautification company, formerly known as Erosion Restoration, was started in 2002 by Andre. During this time, the erosion control industry was in its infancy. At first, André mastered installing Geo Tubes to stabilize the shoreline, protect against erosion and for land reclamation. Over the years, Landshore® began introducing and specializing in other erosion control applications as well, such as, Geo Web, Rock and Cement Rip Rap, Retaining Walls and Sheet Piling, Gabions, Articulated Concrete Mat, and Turf Reinforcement Mat. Along with the introduction of an in-house engineering team, this allowed Landshore® to be at the forefront of the erosion control industry. The in-house engineering team provides a comprehensive analysis and designs for the shoreline. These Erosion Control Plans include every detail from historical data to soil analysis, to drainage conditions and community-wide designs.

This specialization in the erosion control industry fostered André’s latest pursuit: the Erosion Control Panel. The Erosion Control Panel (ECP) allows for land stabilization, long-term sustainability of embankment material, minimizes erosion problems caused by water contact, surface flow and wave action, improves performance of vegetated slopes by reinforcing root systems and directing hydraulic flows over the top of the cells, all in a modern, light-weight and durable design. The Erosion Control Panel has been used in shoreline restoration challenges for the City of Pompano Beach, the Town of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, Waterford Masters’ Homeowners Association in Venice, Florida and the McArthur Golf Club in Hobe Sound, Florida. The Erosion Control Panel is exclusive to Landshore® Enterprises, LLC and has been designed and patented by André himself.

Today, Landshore® Enterprises, LLC, has expanded from its roots in South Florida to serve across Florida and the Southeastern United States. The Landshore® team is constantly growing and facing new shoreline restoration challenges each day. Last December, Landshore® completed a creek restoration project for the City of Gainesville in which it was noted that this was the first undertaking of its kind in the state. It’s challenges like these that they crave and pushes them to innovate.

Has it been a smooth road?
The erosion control industry is very specialized. Early on, André spent his time in the field learning the proper applications of various erosion control products and overseeing construction. As our team will attest, it’s not easy to learn our construction methods.

The conditions and environments we work in can sometimes be very delicate places to work. We must be keen to not harm or endanger waterways, wildlife or ecosystems. Because of this, Landshore®’s engineering team must perform the necessary research, permitting and communicate with local governments and water districts to design the most effective and environmental-friendly erosion control solution. We are constantly striving to be as conscientious and environmental-friendly as we can be.

In 2008, the economic crisis took its toll on Landshore® and its customers. Thankfully, we were able to persevere.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
