Today we’d like to introduce you to Ana Quero and Maria Castro.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Launched in November 2018, My Tea Bar is a modern Miami tea company. We use seasonal high-grade ingredients and teas.
We aim for an experience combining a minimalistic, and natural aesthetic with the community of a small business.
After overcoming breast cancer, I ( Mariedna Castro) wanted to reinvent my life by creating a business with purpose.
The health and tranquility of tea seemed like the logical answer. It was also the perfect way to honor how tea helped me so much during those days through cancer treatment, as tea has plenty of benefits (antioxidants) that make the immune system stronger. It was as if the tea healed my body and soul.
After tea itself was engraved and introduced to our everyday lives, it was then easy to introduce it to our professional life, as we wanted to share our passion for it!
My Tea Bar then began with a cart in a pop-up event, in Pinecrest, Florida. The idea of being able to bring tea to the world, and share our favorite blends, was one that needed to be brought to fruition.
My daughter, Anna, has been always a people-person, social and creative. I decided to move forward with this idea and Ana gave me her support. That’s how our mom-daughter became a business.
After that event, we started receiving a request for a tea bar for all kinds of events: schools, baby showers, weddings, pop-ups… all kinds of public and events.
A few months later, we opened our first store in The Falls Miami, bringing our teas to all our local community and visitors. Why in The Falls? Simon Group opened their doors to our ideas, they offered a spot where TEAVANA used to be located and we said; let’s give it a try… and here we are.
We are focused on offering loose leaf teas, drinks and a healthy food menu perfectly paired as an alternative to our community for a conscious living. As a matter of fact, we are known as the tea store in the mall, also My Tea Bar is the only place in our area where you can find healthy and natural options to eat.
In My Tea Bar, every sip and every bite will bring you just “good stuff” as our customers said.
Since consuming tea is a historical social activity, we are also very social and we often partner with local businesses, suppliers and collaborators to source our store; making this way of My Tea Bar a pleasant local experience for you.
That’s also why at My Tea Bar, we are welcoming to all, and want to serve as a place for collaboration, creativity, and purpose, all over a cup of tea! Let us serve you one!
Has it been a smooth road?
Well, when you start something new, challenges become part of your daily life…
we started this project inspired by a romantic idea of spreading the word about tea and inviting people to include “drinks with a purpose” in their daily life.
However, retail is an entire world… many things are involved: overhead costs, permits, insurances, you name it… neither of us had been involved with retail before so, this entire year has been a very new adventure in our life.
What keeps us motivated is feedback from our customers. Wow!
I would say that is what makes everything smoother and what worth the effort.
As a daughter, I also can tell you that seeing my mom working so hard, learning all kind of new things (kitchen operations, new language (we are from Venezuela), now doing social media… that is a WOW in my heart… we are partners, but she is my mom, so for me she is the boss… and for sure the woman I admire the most.
When she feels tired after working 12 hours at the store just because she loves to do it… I do feel worried, but at the same time, I am so proud of having her as a mom and as a model to follow.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with My Tea Bar – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
What makes My Tea Bar different and unique is our purpose…. our reason… our love… there are several good places out there that offer great teas as well, and we love that! So much! We actually want people to find in herbals and teas the right option to drink…
We are proud of our tea selection, from herbals and Ayurvedic blends to the purest teas… from everywhere.
We have been dedicated to learn and study about their benefits and how to create our own blends as well.
Always looking for a new experience in every sip…. from fruity and fun flavors up to light and subtle taste.
We source our loose leaf from companies that also share our values. These companies honor the tea business with the same love we do. Sourcing directly from farmers instead of brokers… give the right energy we want you to drink. Moreover, this way we can guarantee the high quality of each leave.
Most of our teas have been organically grown and handled with high-quality standards.
Another thing we do… and is moving very well is our catering. We invite people to make of My Tea Bar, your tea bar.
We offer beautiful setups for a tea station, unique in the way they look and also with unique flavors. In order to pick the right teas for your event, we ask for the food menu so we can make our recommendations and pair our teas with the food… for an unforgettable experience, teas just like wines should be paired with any food you are serving.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
The best about Miami: having people from everywhere! What a blessing… we love learning about people’s preferences… these preferences come mostly from our origins.
We love the challenge of creating strong flavors, thinking out of the box to offer teas that sometimes don’t taste as tea just because it is a fun flavor.
Breaking the typical rules of serving a specific tea iced because of our weather instead of hot… that is fun!
Pairing teas with empanadas, pastelitos and tequenos (remember, we are from Venezuela). Ohhh, that is something else… of course, our bakery is also with purpose, and our food options are homemade (from us and from local small partners) with only with natural ingredients… (try our matcha toast made with our homemade matcha butter – 100 vegan and organic or try our sweet potato empanadas… uff).
