Today we’d like to introduce you to Alvaro Hernandez.
Alvaro, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Hello, I am just a kid from Hialeah with big dreams. I started my company in December 2015, after working numerous types of jobs from selling glasses, to cleaning storm drains, to selling roofing material for a few years and then becoming a warehouseman for a hazardous company. I was the best warehouseman ever to work there. My routes for the next day were set up and warehouse was clean by 10 am every day. Seeing my efficiency, the manager also shared his clerical work with me to help me progress in the company. I am a fan of driving, especially 18 wheelers so my manager said, get your CDL license and you can become a driver.
Wow was I excited! I went ahead and studied while I worked to learn the rules of the road and safe driving… for NOTHING… when I got my license and I said “OK- now it’s time to do your part and give me a route”, they went back on their word and decided to keep me in the warehouse. So I gave them my two weeks notice only because the company was so large and I did not want to close any doors if I failed elsewhere. One day online I saw an ad for a ‘roof salesman’, I sent my resume and right away they reached back out. We set up an interview to meet with the hiring team. Little did I know this tall American fellow was going to be a mentor and a role model for me. Earl Johnston of Johnston Roofing saw the potential in me and took me under his wing.
There I learned about customer service and how to treat/take care of customers. Sold roofs for them for three years, averaging over a 1 million in sales every year and increasing. I enjoyed my time there, made friends, new family but most of all gained an enormous amount of knowledge about roofing and life that couldn’t be taught elsewhere. 2012-2015. One day I told Mr. Johnston I wanted more out of life so he said….what are you going to name your company… Big Al’s Roofing?
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Big Al’s Roofing. – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
In South Florida there are a million roofers, there is the good, the bad, the ugly and then you have Big Al’s. We are not car salesmen. We go with the intent to educate the customer on what is best at that time for their roof. We go over in detail of how things WILL play out if they go with us.
We specialize in all types of roofs but for some reason, larger type of homes is where we are recognized the most by being able to get in and out while others are still working on their projects. What sets us apart is that we deliver what we preach- the ability for our guys to create a personal relationship with every client who gives us the time. This confidence goes both ways and makes the process a lot smoother.
No roofing nightmares here.
What’s your outlook for the industry in our city?
Do it! South Florida is one of the best spots for roofers. There is still plenty of work to go around and if you’re in this business to take care of the people along with possessing good workmanship, then you should be fine. When I told people what I wanted to do, some said “why, there are so many roofers as is- you will be just another roofer”.
They were wrong. We are not just another roofing company, We are Big Al’s Roofing, LLC. We thrive on our motto- Roofing for the people. We aim to bring hassle-free, professional and timely roof turnovers to South Florida along with the goal of educating people on their roofing needs. Set up an appointment with us to get the Big Al’s experience, and you will not be disappointed.
