Meet Alicia Boateng

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alicia Boateng.

Alicia, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My name is Alicia Boateng. I am Cuban, a blessed mother of four, and a wife to a very intellectual and outstanding black gentleman (also a member of the very prestigious fraternity, Kappa Alpha Psi) by the name of Edward A. Boateng. We live near Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

I have always been an innovative thinker. My passion lives among my creativity and ability to not only think outside the box but underneath it, around it and on top of the box! In 2019, I opened my online shop and praised God daily for giving me the opportunity to do what I absolutely love, which is to create, design and make people smile with my products. Walt Disney once said – “Whatever you do, do it well. Do it so well that when people see you do it, they will want to come back and see you do it again and they will want to bring others and show them how well you do what you do”. Empowering women is what Alicia Boateng Designs is all about.

Has it been a smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road because there are a lot of “crafters” out there and they seem to all be doing the same thing. It took me a while to figure out who my audience is and what “problem” my product is solving for them. Once I figured that out, I knew I was on the right path.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Alicia Boateng Designs is known for its whimsical gifts, personalized items, Holiday ornaments, and the Afro Glam Collection. The Afro Glam Collection was created to motivate and empower women of all colors, all over the world. This world is full of beautiful, strong, influential and empowered women and my cups are a tribute to us. There are many obstacles in life that make some women forget what they are capable of achieving in their lives. In history, women have been put down, held back and told we are incapable. I have a 16-year-old daughter named Macy Genevieve. I emphasize why female empowerment is crucial in today’s generation of women. It is needed to create a world full of aspiring female CEOs, scientists, athletes, politicians, artists, and overall girl-bosses.

Each cup is delicately handmade by my team and I. It takes almost 2.5 hours to complete each cup. Once I place the last stone on each cup, I decide on her name. No one cup will ever be the same, which resembles us, as women and our many facets which makes us all unique. When women feel beautiful, when they feel they have power, when they are strong and backed up by a strong community, they excel. That is what my Afro Glam Cups portray. Alicia Boateng Designs was recently featured on Deco Drive WSVN / Channel 7 with Shireen Sandoval and Lynn Martinez. The entire collection consists of over 25 Afro Glam cups.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
What I love the most is the diversity we see in our city. There are women from all over the world in South Florida and their beauty and strength should be celebrated everyday.
