Today we’d like to introduce you to Alberto Gil.
So, before we jump into specific questions about what you do, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
As a kid, I could have never guessed even half of the events that would take place in my life, and where those would lead me.
I believe there are many versions of ourselves, every time you open a door, some other closes. I’m sure that, just like me, there are a lot of people out there wondering if the decisions they’ve made have been “the right ones” and whether these are leading them in the direction of what they have always dreamed of.
One thing I can tell you is that my dreams and goals are constantly changing, evolving. The things that I dreamed of a few years ago, and some times even weeks ago, are not the same ones I pursue now. This, in my head, reinforces the idea that change is certain, and will always be there. Every time I’m starting to feel comfortable, life is kind enough to send some uncertainty my way, which makes me reassess myself and reinvent my goals.
I have done many things along my journey, from singing back in my country, to bartending for quite a long time here in the states, and even owning a paddleboard shop now, called Shoreside Club. I could write a huge list of things I’ve done; however, those are just that, things I have done, not who I am.
Who I am is still in development and changing constantly. I think of myself as someone dynamic, with the ability to navigate awkward moments; moments I consider the bridge between the current circumstance and a great experience.
Do I fear anything? Yeah, I fear to settle only for what’s available to me at a given time and not reaching higher.
I understand I’m not entitled to anything, therefore I will do all I can to influence the outcome of certain events; however, if things don’t work out the way I wanted, that should not keep me up at night. I embrace the good and bad in my life.
So far, my story has been full of excitement and challenge. I guess what I’m after is building a free lifestyle, not ruled by a schedule or attached to a city or country, invest in new skills and create opportunities for myself and those around me.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It’s been far from smooth, I’ve found that really the most difficult thing has been to embrace the fact that there is not necessarily a secured paycheck every week when you become a business owner.
Shoreside Club is growing fast but still far from what I envision.
Please tell us about Shoreside Club – what should we know?
Shoreside Club is a paddleboard and kayak rental company based in Miami Beach.
I believe that what sets us apart from similar businesses in the area is our customer service and the quality of products that we carry, not to mention the community aspect we are developing.
We are hosting meetings where we have different speakers on topics like urban development and how that impacts our environment, as well as concerning factors like water quality and sea level rising.
These special events are making us contemplate the idea of forming a members club to support our neighborhood and educate tourists that visit our location.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My dad, probably he is the one who deserves all the credit.
He taught me how your attitude shapes your reality and that’s what I believe, has unveiled great opportunities in my way.
