Meet Aja Butler-Burns of ABAjewels in Kendall

Today we’d like to introduce you to Aja Butler-Burns.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
ABAjewels started a few years ago (2013) as an artistic outlet at a time, when I wasn’t doing anything that pertained to my college degree (Accessory Design). I wanted to make the jewelry pieces that I couldn’t find in stores – my first creation was a pair of 1″ wide Brass Ankle Cuffs. From there, I utilized my fashion sense and love for crystals to create unique and one of a kind pieces for people all over the world. I’m grateful now to be able to make special and even healing jewels that empower their wearers. My inspiration is pulled from a wide variety of sources – from Ancient Egypt to 1940’s Americana, from the world of S&M to, of course, the magic and beauty of Earth’s natural crystals. Everything is made in my home studio, by hand, the old fashioned way (fingers have definitely been hammered a time or two.) As cliche as it sounds, everything I make is created with love.

In late 2016, I started my second baby – Apothecary A. I am a HUGE bath obsessive and would mix and create relaxing concoctions that people responded to on social media – that gave me the push I needed to create a line of organic, luxurious bath salts for people who might not have the time to search out different oils and herbs. I’ve expanded my line to facial skin care such as scrubs and masques and chemical free insect repellents.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Well the road has been a twisty one for sure! When I first started, I didn’t know the first thing about running a business. I’ve had to learn the rules along the way, as well as program myself to be more proficient with my time. I have a totally artsy mind. I even have “pay attention” tattooed on my wrist. Getting myself to be both the creator and administrator has been my biggest struggle. (I look at a spreadsheet and my eyes immediately get heavy.)

Please tell us about ABAjewels.
ABAjewels is a jewelry company, specializing in crystal and metal jewels and accessories. I would say I’m best known for my Angel Aura Chokers, which feature an asymmetric design and raw quartz crystals, as well as my metal chokers, ankle cuffs and crystal crowns.

All of my pieces are 100% handmade, never mass produced or even made by anyone other than me. I take pride in that for sure. Another thing that I love to do, is to make custom pieces for clients. Often these special pieces have spiritual, healing aspects that I’m happy to facilitate.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
One of my fondest childhood memories is hanging out with my godmother and playing in her jewelry box. Each spectacular gem and bauble had a story behind it. I felt like a grown up when she’d let me wear her diamonds and emeralds to go with her on old lady errands (as I called them) and during our tea parties. PS – that was real tea served out of copper tea set! 🙂
