Today we’d like to introduce you to Aimee Sherman.
Aimee, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started in 1995 with a small boutique nail and skin care salon in Boca Raton called The Beauty Spot. As a woman with a long-term love affair with all things beauty, my first foray into operating a boutique nail salon was a delightful success. For over 20 years we have been serving the central Boca communities with every type of nail service you can imagine from acrylics to gels to traditional manis and pedis that are done with a luxurious sense of care. We also do facials, waxing and eyelash extensions.
I think what has made the business so successful all these years is that our location is seated in an area where the women and men really take pride in their nail and skin care. It’s important to them. Our shop is like a small family business and many of the women who work here have been with us since the beginning. There is a very friendly atmosphere in our shop. We know almost all the clients by name. We love what we do. We love coming to work every day and that is reflected in our customer’s experience. We also carry our own private label skin care line as well as PCA and of course other items related to our business. And there is a boutique jewelry shop inside as well.
Has it been a smooth road?
It has been a pretty smooth road all along. There are always struggles along the way. But we try to press on forward and look ahead when they occur. Our challenges generally emerge simply as a function of having so many personal stories under one roof. But we always try to support one another and do our best to take it all in a positive way and move forward.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into The Beauty Spot/Bocabeautyspot story. Tell us more about the business.
The Beauty Spot, known online as Bocabeautyspot is a very special place. I am the owner and manager, I work behind the desk making appointments changing appointments, greeting the clients and helping them with their needs. We have a lot of clients who have repeat appointments year round and we are constantly updating those as well. I do the ordering for the shop for the supplies. My husband and partner handle the payroll.
Our shop is quite popular in our area and we are known for our friendly, family-like atmosphere. Many of the clients know each other and enjoy the friendships they have made and nurture when they see each other and connect in the shop.
After many years, what I am most proud of as a business owner is that we employ over 20 women and provide them with income and a positive work environment, which allows them to care for their families. It’s a beautiful thing.
Since we started our business, over 20 years ago, there have been so many nail salons that have opened in our area but we have always maintained our family, boutique approach and feel a great sense of pride in that.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
One of the big changes I expect to see is a greater breadth of materials and products developed for services. For example, the popularity in gel manicures has been a game changer and I also see people curious about lower toxicity product lines. While the salon industry in Boca Raton is huge, it is still very female-focused. I see a shift towards males more and more and think this tend will continue. Until it is possible to get your nails done online, I think there will be more growth. But then again, there will always be something special about coming to a warm and friendly salon to have your nails done, that just feels great.
