Meet Adriana Hernandez of HCD GROUP in Fort Lauderdale

Today we’d like to introduce you to Adriana Hernandez.

Adriana, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
From a very early age, I always knew I wanted to be an engineer like my father; so when it was time to pick a career I chose Civil Engineering, the best fit I thought of so I could go straight from college to HCD to work with my family. Things didn’t work out quite as I planned them because I happened to graduate at the worst time possible for our industry, 2008. Immediately after college, I was offered a position as an engineer at an Oil Refinery in Texas and shortly after I relocated to Houston to work for Turner Construction. With Turner I learned the ins and outs of how the big commercial projects get built and managed, it was the best school I could have asked for. but my heart was always in Florida, where my family was re-building a construction company after the market crash.

I stayed with Turner for almost five years, I traveled all over Texas and the US, it was on one of those trips that I met my husband at a Training Event, another Turner Employee! In 2013 my father who had come back from the crash even stronger offered us (my husband and I) the opportunity to quit our jobs and join HCD, that time as employees only. It wasn’t until 2015 that we created HCD GROUP CORP as partners to my parents and brother, with the vision to grow the business even further, and become leaders in our industry.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I would say a career in construction is never smooth… this industry is a never-ending problem, but at least it is not boring! I do think we have the common struggles most businesses face, nothing out of the ordinary, tough clients, tough contracts to fulfill, but those represent new challenges and learning opportunities that I believe will only make us better and stronger for what’s to come. The biggest challenge as a business it’s probably happening right now and it’s called growing pains, it’s hard to figure out a new balance when trying to grow at the same time. It starts with lessons learned and restructuring our processes to take HCD where we want it to go.

On an individual aspect, my biggest challenge is balancing everything that’s going on with HCD GROUP while having a one and four year old at home. I was having the busiest year of my life in 2018, and of the company’s life; while pregnant. I now have a one year old girl that demands and deserves my undivided attention, that’s the real struggle for me, wanting to be 100% on both roles, as a business owner and a mother.

Please tell us about your company.
We are a construction company, we do residential and commercial projects. Our niche/specialty is Custom Luxury Homes. At HCD GROUP we work with our clients to materialize their dreams from Pre-Construction Services; where we perform value engineering to meet our clients’ budget, all the way to Move-In ready homes, condos or commercial spaces.

What I’m most proud of about my company is my team, we are very unique in the sense that we are all family members that like working with one another. A lot of people ask me how we do it, how I can work with my dad, how I can work with my husband! The answer honestly it’s I don’t know how it just works… I met my husband working so it’s natural in our relationship I guess, even though being business partners with the family has challenges of its own we make it work without much effort, so I’m very proud of that.

I am also very proud of the moment HCD is at right now, we have grown our portfolio significantly these past four years and the best is yet to come for us, the next four years look very promising.

What sets us apart from others? Integrity and Customer Service. I don’t want to generalize but General Contractors have a very bad reputation in Miami, so I work extra hard to make sure people NEVER have even the slightest opportunity to think of HCD as another GC. We put our integrity first, always. We also work extremely hard to try to keep our word to our clients, it’s very hard in my industry because you depend on hundreds of people under our umbrella but we try like no other, sometimes at a personal cost. I’m sure there are many great companies out there that do similar work but what you will find with us is someone that CARES, I will care about your project and your needs almost as much as you.

What has been the proudest moment of your career so far?
Getting recognized by my father as his successor. Knowing that he trusts me as a professional and a business woman enough to eventually give me the leadership position of the company makes me immensely proud. I am working very hard to be ready for when that day comes. I have many proud moments but that one is closest to my heart.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Nothing, I wouldn’t do anything differently. Of course, I have lessons learned, both personally and as a company, we have made mistakes but I have no regrets, all those mistakes have made us grow and learn to be better. Biggest Lesson Learned for me: Trust but Verify, I recommend it to everyone, construction industry or not. 🙂
