Today we’d like to introduce you to Adriana Carvalho and David Zalben.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Adriana and David. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Our foray into retail started as visual artists. Earlier in our relationship we were a married couple, and as we transitioned out of the marriage we continued creating together, which soon after led to the PinkBastard ArtForum where we produced visual art exhibitions with art galleries, art fairs and with a boutique hotel.
We always sought out new opportunities to merge business and art, and started by freehand embroidering tee shirts with unexpected designs.
Through a friend we were introduced to a woman who had a retail shop in Ironside Miami, where we sold our tees for a while, but after a few months she decided to leave the shop, and offered us to take over the lease. From that point we threw ourselves into the inspirational surroundings of the Ironside campus and expanded our embroidery line to include other garments, tote bags and home decor-as well bring in other creators to help give them a platform to show their jewelry or other hand-crafted works.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The challenge is to breathe deeply and once and awhile look at your life from a bird’s eye point of view-that helps keep things in perspective, and learn to be yourself!
But smooth or struggle is a state of mind. We never really thought about it in those terms. Yes, of course financially it can be stressful when operating a business, or just living life, but growth is not measured by money, and it doesn’t happen overnight, so as one evolves you build up a base of experience and KEY people that support you.
Having said that, we found meditation instrumental to mental clarity and a filter to release the stress of money concerns…but in the final analysis the wave child-like joy that comes from creating is like a drug, and that dedication eventually spawns opportunity.
Please tell us about PinkBastard ArtShop.
We believe business has to fit your personality-which for us is personal because we want people to be happy with what we create and sell them.
We think the combo of clever and fun designs and the choice of making our own contemporary freehand embroidery is an unusual element that helps us standout. We can create on the spot without having to concern about working with a company that might cause delays, added costs and concerns from not knowing how the final produce will look. So in this way we have control over our stuff.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Well, we have always gone with the flow. Whatever opportunity comes our way we grab it and do our best to see it through to fruition, which never ends, because you know one idea gives birth to new ideas and new challenges…anyway, life is not about right or wrong decisions, so doing things differently doesn’t cross our mind…it is all about doing the best that you can!
