Life & Work with Yeney Wilson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yeney Wilson.

Hi Yeney, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I have been obsessed with candles for as long as I can remember. I started making candles as a hobby giving them away as gifts. It quickly grew into a business in early 2013 and it was something I was truly passionate about. I had recently gotten married and I was focusing on growing my family and my passion for candles was put on the back burner. Years later, in January 2014, I welcomed my twins into this world and I was focused on being a mom and a wife and all of the above took up all of my time. In 2016, I got divorced and I was in such a low place in my life. I was focused on raising my twins and being the best mom I could be for them even though I felt like I needed something for myself. I went back to making candles for myself and friends and family and I felt like it could really become something more. I tested different fragrances and different waxes and I finally found a formula that worked really well. My son got diagnosed with asthma so it was really important for me to have a candle that was as clean as possible.

I finally got my formula together and I created beautiful fragrances for my candles. I still needed a name and I was totally stuck. I took some time off to regroup and see if something came up. I was basically stuck. I had this line created and it only needed the most important part, which was the name. I started thinking back to something that was so personal to me, yet something that could be a message. Then it hit me, 11! I would always see the number 11 and I always felt like it was always showing up my different areas in my life. From my change from my coffee order to the date when my children were born to the amount of letters in my name, the answer was always 11! I did some research and I discovered that the number 11 or 1111 is a sign. A powerful sign from the universe that you are exactly where you need to be and that angels are by your side. I decided I needed to incorporate this name to my brand and that is when 11:11 Candle Co was born in mid-2019. I made my website as well my Instagram page myself and I have connected with some many amazing people who have also experienced the magic of 1111 in their daily lives.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I could say it has been a bumpy road. When I was getting established, it was late 2019. I was building and creating my brand and then Covid happened. Everything shut down and markets were closed. The only way I could really connect with people was through social media. In a world where everyone was home and had so much uncertainty, I wanted to offer something that could be even just a little positive.

I also was 100% self-funded. I didn’t ask anyone for a loan to start my business. Just savings and a prayer!

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I would say I am most proud of how far I have come. I was on prescription medications for anxiety and depression pretty much my whole life. In mid-2016, I met my now boyfriend and he really helped me to grow as a person and overcome my fears. I am proud of my business and the fragrances I have created. I have been able to take experiences from throughout my life and put them in a candle. I love the fact that I have created my candles that are made from coconut and soy wax as clean as possible. This brand is something I am very proud of.

Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
I would like to say to whoever is reading this, no matter where you are in your life, always do something that makes you happy. I know it sounds generic and cliche but it is so true and it is something everyone should be doing. Don’t be afraid to chase your dreams and remember that money isn’t everything. I was working in a male-dominated industry and I was making a lot of money but I was miserable. It just wasn’t for me. At the end, what matters is what made us truly happy.
