Inspiring Conversations with Ryan Malkin of Malkin Law P.A.

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ryan Malkin. Them and their team share their story with us below:

Ryan Malkin is principal attorney at Malkin Law P.A., a firm focused on alcohol beverage and cannabis law. Ryan started his firm after moving from New York City to Miami more than seven years ago. Ryan previously worked at Pernod Ricard USA in New York where he concentrated on supporting the sales and marketing teams to ensure compliance with rules and regulations in all 50 states.

Prior to his work at Pernod, Ryan was an Assistant District Attorney in Manhattan. Ryan investigated and prosecuted a variety of crimes, with a  focus on long-term, white-collar crime investigations. Ryan gained unprecedented skills and an understanding of state governmental agencies.

Ryan’s passion for the alcohol industry began as a staff writer for SmartMoney. Ryan specialized in travel and hospitality writing, with an emphasis on the beverage alcohol industry, covering both brands and category trends. Ryan regularly interviewed executives, brand owners, producers, and industry experts to provide guidance to readers. Ryan also regularly interviewed nightclub and bar owners, designers, managers, and doormen to bring new ventures and cocktail trends to life and giving Ryan insight into the bar and nightclub business. His articles have appeared in such publications as Beverage MediaLiquor.com, The Wall Street Journal, New York Post, DJTimes, and Esquire to name a few.

Ryan is a regular contributor to Craft Spirits Magazine, Artisan Spirit, VinePair, and SevenFiftyDaily. Ryan is counsel to the American Craft Spirits Association, Florida Craft Spirits Association and Cannabis Beverage Association.

Ryan was named as a Top Alcohol Beverage Lawyer in South Florida by South Florida Legal Guide, with Malkin Law also being a Top Alcohol Beverage Law Firm. Ryan was named a SuperLawyer and Rising Star in the legal community. Ryan was also named one of the top 250 cannabis law experts.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I see challenges and obstacles as opportunities. Craft distillers in Florida can now sell cocktails much like breweries sell beer, which means there will be more craft distillers popping up throughout Florida and we want to be there to support that growth. We are also working hard to push direct to consumer shipping of distilled spirits forward so spirits are treated the same as wine.

As you know, we’re big fans of Malkin Law P.A. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about your firm?
The alcohol beverage industry is the most highly regulated industry in the country. We focus on helping clients navigate the complexities. Malkin Law provides big supplier in-house, industry specific experience to our clients. We also have a business-focused approach. We are known for being efficient, practical and solution orientated. From a brand perspective, we are very proud to serve the craft community, having supported the growth of independently-owned craft brands for nearly a decade.

If you plan to enter the alcohol beverage industry, you should call us. If you have ever dreamed of starting your own brand, we can tell you how it can be done. It is not as complicated to get started as you may think.

How do you think about luck?
We are lucky to have had great supporters along the way. For instance, the legendary distiller Dave Pickerell, best known for being the head distiller of Makers Mark for many years and consulting on dozens of well-known craft spirits brands, helped get us involved in the craft community. Many of my personal friends and network are in the alcohol industry, which has created a great source of referrals. Also, it just so happens that my wife is one of the leading PR professionals in the alcohol industry and has her own boutique firm headquartered in Miami (Culturewise Collective), so the alcohol beverage industry is truly the family business.
