Inspiring Conversations with Cristy Stewart-Harfmann

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cristy Stewart-Harfmann.

Hi Cristy, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
When my daughter was born, I was working 100 hours a week. Work was my everything, well, second to only my husband. My co-workers and I used to joke that I would give birth in the office and then go right back to work. Our daughter arrived a month early and our lives changed forever. I did not want to go back to work. I kept pushing maternity leave longer and longer. When I finally went back to the office, the joy I felt at work was gone. I would leave some days before our daughter woke up and was home when she was already asleep.

I wanted to work for myself but I did not know what that looked like. I had heard of blogging and knew some local influencers like Michelle Rodgers-Olsen from Modern Boca Mom and Heather McMechan from Local Mom Scoop. So, I was inspired to start blogging to refind my passion. And six years later, that is exactly what my business, Happy Family Blog is; it is my passion. I am so grateful for the audience I have built and the 100s of brands who have trusted me to share their message. What started as a creative outlet became a business that has supported our growing family.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Success in blogging does not happen overnight. I often joke with people that this is a great profession if you are ok with making no money for the first year. I think now there are better resources and courses so it would take you less time to be profitable.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Happy Family Blog is a resource for families. Our goal is to help you find something to celebrate every day. We share creative DIYs, parties, easy recipes and travel tips.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
The blogging community is so supportive. I have a number of unofficial mentors. Michelle from Modern Boca Mom is my blogging bestie. Before COVID, we traveled to conferences and press trips all over the world together. I am so grateful for her support. Heather from Local Mom Scoop has been a mentor since before I even had my blog. In regular times we met monthly with Flavia from Neat House Sweet Home and Lisa from Garlic and Zest. All of our businesses are so different it is inspiring to share tips and tricks that work for each of us. Jessica from Celebration Stylist is another local blogger I met through IG. I started out as a huge fan of her work and that relationship has grown into a true friendship. Our kids even go to school together.
