Hidden Gems: Meet Maria Fernanda and Adriana Duprat of The Flower Girls Miami

Hi Maria and Adriana, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
Let’s take you back to the beginning of it all. We are two sisters (Adri & Mafe) and we are from Venezuela. We moved to the United States 5 years ago. And our backgrounds are rather different to what you would expect. Quite the opposite to being florists. Adri recently finished school for Phycology and Mafe has been working the typical 9-5 corporate job for quite some years in the marketing world. How exciting right? Until… yeah, you figured it out, getting put on furlough due to covid. We are not going to lie. It was pretty shocking. Both of us were struggling with this pandemic. As a recent graduate, Adri was facing the biggest challenge, finding her first job during a pandemic, while millions were getting laid off/furloughed, like her sister. How motivating right? Well… after a couple of days of lots of discouragement (we are not pessimists; we are just being honest here!) we sat down one day and started seriously brainstorming on what to do next. We have both always wanted to have a family business, but never had the time or internal drive to make it happen. But…the opportunity was here! What did we have to lose? At least we would be busy and have something to do, instead of mopping around about the job we used to have. You are probably wondering “why flowers?”. And honestly, the answer is simple. After having both of our birthdays during quarantine, and receiving flowers ourselves, we realized there was an opportunity in Miami to do something different. Not all girls like the typical red roses! And we could definitely give it our personal twist and make rustic hand-tied bouquets. We started playing with flowers, mix and matching them and gifting them to our friends. We also created our Instagram (@TheFlowerGirls.MIA) to start documenting our creations during quarantine. And our close friends started following us and reposting us. They found our creations unique! The friends of our friends started following us and reaching out to ask how they could buy them, so… we opened our webpage and, well… you probably figured it out, sales started to come in and haven’t stopped since then.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It’s been a learning curve. We didn’t know the amount of time it takes to build a bouquet. We get fresh flowers really early every morning (this job is not your dream job if you are not an early riser) and we also hand clean each and every single flower we use in our arrangements. Flowers are delicate, so removing all the funky looking petals takes quite some time! This is probably the step that takes the longest, as well as deliveries, which have also been a mission. You might see us at your doorstep, delivering ourselves, or even our dad! The mess we make every day while cleaning the petals is also another piece of art! So, cleaning our living room (where we do the arrangements at the moment) after doing the bouquet is also a mission. Hopefully we can get a store soon! And the last challenge -but also amazing news- is that Mafe got her job back and is doing marketing once again! Even though it’s from the comfort of our home, her time is very limited and Adri has had to own the show lately.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
We are proud to have a business of our own, but most of all we are proud to be a women owned business! If you don’t want the typical red rose bouquet, then you should definitely check out our rustic arrangements that are built by color palettes. The options are limited, which also helps you pick your flowers fast and not spend hours glancing through our website. Getting flowers shouldn’t be a mission! Our arrangements can be found online and should be ordered with at least one day in advance. We offer Purple Dreams (a bouquet that is built using mostly purple flowers), Pink Surprise! (consists of mostly pink flowers), Golden Hour (a bouquet of predominant yellow and white tones), Summer Sunset (oranges and reds) and lastly our personal favorite, the -Surprise Me! Bouquet- which is designer’s choice and you let us pick the blooms for you! Another thing that is really cool about us is that no bouquet will ever be the same as the other. Flowers may vary, but you get the color palette you chose for sure! We also offer a subscription service. You can opt in to receive flowers on a weekly, bi-weekly or monthly basis. Not only is the bouquet less expensive, but you also get free local deliveries! If you are a flower lover, you should definitely check it out. You will be receiving flowers without even having to worry about it.

How do you think about happiness?
Being able to start something of our own together, as sisters. But we can’t deny that spending time with our #flowerdog all day every day is pretty sweet! In case you haven’t checked our Instagram stories, our dog does flower inspections of all the orders that will be delivered during the day. All jokes aside, it’s been a really fun journey since June where we have been able seen our growth and realized that if you are persistent with what you want, and work towards it, you will get it! Hopefully you get a chance to check out our flowers, get some for yourself or send them as a surprise to others! And hopefully we can open a storefront soon and you can stop by and say hi!
