Exploring Life & Business with Wedney Jean of Braids By Bouji

Today we’d like to introduce you to Wedney Jean.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I was the only girl for a very long time in the household, so my time consisted of playing with my dolls, my mom’s hair, and anyone who came around for me to practice in their hair. Back then, there was no YouTube – it was trial and error.

Everyone loved how I learned how to braid just on a doll and the journey began there. When my mom passed away, I ended up living with my aunt and my little cousin became my protege. So in middle school, I used to do everyone’s hair in school when we had the time and then in high school I did hair for money when I felt like it.

And then eventually, I didn’t care for it anymore- my hands would cramp up really bad, there would be braiding hair everywhere and it was just exhausting. After working numerous jobs and not making the income I wished for; I started doing hair again during the pandemic – I’ve always loved doing hair and I didn’t want to ever work for anyone else so I turned my hobby into my hustle

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road- it’s definitely been hard- learning all these new techniques, and products. Just being in the BEAUTY game period is ALOT. If you don’t love it, it won’t work for you is what I’m learning.

There are a lot of new waves that have to be learned in order to excel- you have to be dedicated and not easily influenced (what’s for you will always be for you).

There’s lots of competition, lots of critiques, a lot of busy days, and then there are slow days but you learn to manage and then you adapt to what’s best for you.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
My business name is Braids By Bouji – an old friend of mine gave me the name Bouji and it stuck because I’m a perfectionist- I like things a certain way so the job can get done.

What sets me apart from other stylist because my clients have told me this repeatedly; is that my customer service wins them over. They say I’m very welcoming, professional and I make them comfortable.

I don’t only braid hair but I also care for their natural hair before the braids and they appreciate that. You can come in the salon and get fully serviced, making your day smoother

I am most proud of just being able to service beautiful women with beautiful souls- each and every client that I service – we end up creating a bond- whatever bond it is. Its like we have therapy sessions- sometimes we have cried but we also laugh, share stories- some people need a getaway and my salon is one of those places.

I also make sure I share any knowledge I may have and always advise that when we care for our hair- we feel our best!

I specialize in braids, natural hair care, natural sew ins and ponytails for children, men and women.

What are your plans for the future?
Currently, I have my own salon named after my mother (Tata’s Girls Lounge).

I’m hoping to someday be a full-time traveling stylist- open up other businesses outside of hair – continue to sell my hair oil- teach other women how to work smarter and not harder and continue to meet wonderful women who share the same interest as me and want to grow.
