Exploring Life & Business with Alexandra Colucci

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexandra Colucci.

Hi Alexandra, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
A lot of my recent victories in my career come from humble beginnings. I was living in Chicago working a typical 9-5 at Radisson Blu Hotel near Millennium Park. I was complacent, I liked my job working in sales and private events. This was at the beginning of 2020, just before COVID had spread to the states. I remember it perfectly when they told me I was furloughed. At first, I didn’t think anything of it. Everyone around me, my co-workers, were getting furloughed. We were all in this together. I thought at the most we’d be away for two weeks and then coming back to work, and everything would go back to normal.

Weeks went by, nothing was normal. Weeks turned into months; six months later, I received the call I dreaded most. Laid-off. Our hotel shut down for a period of time. Every booked event was canceled. It seemed like there was no light at the end of the tunnel. During the time spent at home during COVID, I realized I was probably never going to have another opportunity to have this much time off, so I did what I thought was going to be best for me- adjust. During this time, I realized that I needed to make a change in life. I was comfortable. and I knew great things never come from comfort zones.

I took the time to adjust to the change in what was happening in the world. My career in hospitality, I realized, was so dependent on tourism, leisure, and others and how quickly it was all taken away from me- I needed to make an adjustment so I could be more in control of my income and my future.

I devoted my time to learning about the stock market, trading, investing. I realized how valuable time is and how time is what runs your life. How do you use this time, what will you do with it, and how precious it is. The time made me realize that I wanted to change. So my husband and I made the decision to move to our home state Illinois and move to Florida. Moving has many challenges- the fear of the unknown, starting over, it really tests oneself. I understood why so many people don’t make a change because it is easier to do what is safe and comfortable. But I know if I didn’t try, I would never know if the grass is truly greener on the other side. I was learning about what was happening to the economy and inflation, so we decided to go look at buying a property in Florida. This was a big moment for me- a milestone. Owning a home resembled so much- the ideology of the American dream. It’s emotional and scary, and nerve-wracking. I didn’t know the first thing about what to do. So we got an agent that was recommended to us- this agent was the reason I became a realtor.

As a potential first-time homebuyer, I relied on my agent to walk me through the process and make me feel comfortable with the decision. This is literally the biggest financial decision of my life. The experience I had made me even more lost and confused. All I knew is that I never wanted to feel that way again and I didn’t want anyone else to experience that. I had always been interested in Real Estate. I could never justify starting over after having a college degree in something totally different. I finally stopped giving myself excuses and became passionate about making a change. A change in myself and a change reputation of the industry. I took the next five months to eat, breathe and sleep real estate. Moving to a new state, learning an all-new area was motivation. It was a straight grind. I studied real estate law on my morning workout, in car rides, in the shower, videos, podcasts, groups, I did it all. I fully immersed myself in pushing myself because I knew every I was closer to achieving my goal. I gave it my all and it paid off.

I passed my exam on the first try! I was so happy I cried. I believed in myself. The saying: “it’s never too late” is true. At 27 years old, It was possible to start over. Passing the exam was only the beginning. I became a licensed realtor is a state where I had no connections and a city I had only lived for a short few months. I had all odds against me. I channeled that fear into power. I knew I had everything against me, but I had one thing that I knew was special to me.- passion. I am so passionate about helping people, educating them. This is was keeps me going. I know I will work morning to night, seven days a week.

This is what drives me. I know get to work for myself, I am my own brand, and I am so proud of who I’ve become because I’ve worked so hard to become that. It’s truly a blessing to help people, It’s a passion, and I never lose sight of that.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I talked a lot about it before, nothing rewarding comes easy. Losing my job was a pivotal point in my life. I knew that it could either destroy me or make me stronger. You always have a choice in life, and only you can dictate your happiness. You are the author to your book. I am grateful for all the obstacles I faced because I wouldn’t be here with my dream career doing what I love. I remember I had a client once that asked me how long I have been doing this? I had just met him, and I thought, “that is the worst question a new agent could be asked”! I was honest and how new I was to the industry, but that I would work harder than anyone else to help him. At the end of the showings, he has told me how happy he was to work with me and even recommended me to someone else.

I truly felt I had all odds against me, having to make all new connections, meet people, put myself out there, and start over in a new state. I’ve learned that people can sense your passion.
