Hi Daynia, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My love for hair and styling began at the age of three years old while attended Primary school in Jamaica. Fast forward 20 years later, I left University if Miami’s School of communication and enrolled in beauty school. I earned my license in 2004 and began working as a stylist in a very popular prestigious salon. While working there, I was mentored by another stylist who shared a similar passion and island background. This mentor later became my husband in 2011. Together we make an awesome team and opened our own salon in ‘March 2013.
The tougher years as a single mother, student, and employee gave me the fuel to aspire to the next level and continually seek the next opportunity. I knew I wanted to be more than just “a hairstylist”, I wanted to change lives and be apart of the improvement of the industry so I partnered with the company JPMS who shares the importance of professionalism by constantly sharpening skills, which is an improvement of ones self and ultimately the industry they are apart of. We wanted to change life’s and give back to our community by volunteering at three local women’s shelter’s, community events such as Miami Triathlon, annual fundraising events for Susan G Komen during Breast cancer Awareness month. As I observe beauty industry trends coupled with our new normal, I realize that direction for the industry is individual work studios. I am currently working on a project that is necessary for that directional flow and will be a great improvement for the industry and community.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It has definitely been a rough road. The most difficult times were in the beginning as a single mother and later in 2016, when my husband was diagnosed and treated for cancer. This was especially hard as I was still mourning my father’s death from cancer in 2008 and the unpredictable nature of cancer weighs heavily, especially when you thought previous to this you had the perfect life.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
We are a professional high-end beauty salon located in Miami, FL. We specialize in hair care and strive to only use the best products and recommendations to achieve it. We pride ourselves in educating our guests about their hair types, chemicals and it’s effects in hair and how to best take care of all types of hair and chemicals enhancements. I believe education sets us apart from other hair salons. As a product of parents who also were educators, our vision was to employ cosmetology students at the end of their course to mentor, study, and train. We have study sessions to prepare for Florida Cosmetology board exam and provide a workplace to help future professionals to get a positive start in the industry.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
Business has its ups and downs. I know that it’s cliché but it’s like the stock market. You have to constantly watch the market trends and prepare for the lows during the highs.
