Today we’d like to introduce you to Jorge Torrealba.
Hi Jorge, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I was born in Venezuela, from a very young age, I discovered that I had a talent for drawing and that I saw people in a comical way, I always made cartoons and drew but they never encouraged me that I could get to live off my talent. At the age of 20, I began to work receiving some commissions for cartoon drawings and I already have more than ten years of experience drawing live cartoons in just minutes. I have almost five years living in the city of Miami and it is my full-time job. Working in all kinds of events and celebrations.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I believe that in general, living from art has its obstacles but I also believe that nothing can stop your dreams. The hardest thing for me so far has been having to emigrate and separate from my family in order to achieve my goals as an artist. But I hope very soon to be able to meet them and celebrate my art and my goals.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I like to present myself as a cartoonist since that is mainly what I do. I make cartoons in a traditional way, totally live and in a few minutes as the client wishes in black and white or color. Also digital cartoons through photos and I have clients from many countries who order their caricature daily. There are also 3D cartoons or sculptures with recycled materials or garbage cones which I have won first places in competitions and contests in ISCA (International Society of Cartoon Artists) a few years ago I started to make my paintings in acrylic and it is also what has me most excited to show I think my work is very entertaining, colorful and fun and it is an excellent combination that many people like one of the things that people liked the most is my #discountforuglypeople everyone has fun with the funniest cartoons you can create with this.
Can you talk about how you think about risk?
Risks are my specialty, hahaha I feel like I have an addiction to these, but you always have to try again and again; the risks will always be part of our life and my life would not be the same if I did not take risks. Without regrets. Risks are necessary and important; they push us to know and achieve things that perhaps we would never discover if we stayed in a comfort zone.
